Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I've been up since 5am. Goliath makes sure of that. Dang foghorn of a 1/2 Leghorn! LOL!

In fact, now that I've finally had T'giving leftovers for breakfast, I think I'm gonna nap on the couch!

hahaha I'm glad my roos are about 200' from the house because they crow 24 hours a day! Sometimes I think, "You ding dongs, why don't you call in ALL the lions and tigers and bears for a chicken dinner!"

Your breakfast sounds good and yep a nap might be in order. :)

Wake up all you fowl people, Thanksgiving Day is over!!! lol I hope you all had a good one. I don't know about where you folks are but I have been getting 1/2" or so of ice off everybody's water in the morning. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to do without that. lol

@Angelicisi... great looking chicks! You and Splash are lookin perdy cute too.

Splash looks perdy warm and toasty to me. Really pretty bird!

We had Thanksgiving day today instead of yesterday due to everyone's work schedules. We've been in a food coma all day and are currently having a Spade's tournament...very cutthroat.

Toby only crows when I bring these meat roosters home for the first few days and then not much more during day hours. He'll crow a lot at 5 am but he doesn't have a loud crow, so I can barely hear it out there. That's one of the main things I love about this old rooster...he's never been a mouthy bird. When he does pop off a few crows in the daytime, I just change his mind about that song and move him along and he stops. Rooster training...it works. Well....mostly....

Except for......Mr. Hobble, once free of his hobbles, did a bunk again. Found him out of the pen this morning and he got his hobbles once again. Hate to do it to him, but he just will not stay in this pen, with both wings cut and only a small window of space in which to fly out, over a fence of 4 1/2 ft.

Then, I went up today to find that one hen had got back IN the rooster pen and she simply has to be doing some major flying to get in there! The little hussy flew into the pen of 12 roosters and is getting bred over and over. I left her there. Hope she learns from this lesson but she doesn't seem too bright.

Took Fat Cochin out of the rooster pen and turned him in with my flock. He has a bum hip and it explains why he has been picked on from his arrival. Took him out of there and he will be living out his 2 wks in freedom of bullying. He's walking taller already and is a real gentle bird...he seems to love his free life. I may just keep him around for a season because he seems to have caught my heart a little...haven't made up my mind about that. I have no need for a Cochin rooster that eats a lot, so the jury is still out on that.

Lol @ fowl people!

Thanks, she's my fav. :)

Handsome crew! Poor Tonya just trying Soooooo hard!
X2!!!! TY, TW! :hugs Here's a few pics of the cheap meats and their pen, as promised. Two of the larger ones were out this morning but went straight back in when I fed, then the pen had to be reinforced where they flew out....with one wing clipped, heavy as lead these boys...flew out over a trellis fence that is 4 1/2 ft. tall. Goes to show you how well wing clipping works...and they had the primaries and secondaries cut! This pen is odd shaped and approx. 5x8x10x8 with a height of (now) 6 ft. on 3 1/2 sides of the pen. Will share more pics when I get them uploaded..I'm in the middle of deboning a turkey! Mr. Hobbled Rooster got his hobbles cut today and he feels like a new man...er..chicken. I've thrown them several apples to work on and a good bit of BOSS in their bedding to give them something to do in their penned existence. It can't be easy to be confined. Fat Cochin....he's one big eater..heavy guy. Several of the larger roosters are extremely heavy, meat dense. They've eaten all they can and are trying to grab the spot of sun coming into the pen for a morning sun bath. Post-breakfast daze of full crops and warm sun.... And ol' Toby...who had another fight with the new boys this morning and looks like he lost this time....he's staying in the coop now and letting his battle wounds heal. I think he lost one of his points in this last battle...the last one looks nipped off. Poor old guy is trying to keep his throne against a whole pen of usurpers..it can't be easy.

We had Thanksgiving day today instead of yesterday due to everyone's work schedules.  We've been in a food coma all day and are currently having a Spade's tournament...very cutthroat.  :D

Hey there Bee. Hope you had a good one. Hope nobody was hurt in that Spade tournament!!! lol

X2 on the good looking chicks!!  Very big and healthy looking!

I don't care if my roosters crow. I actually like it. I love to hear roosters crow and donkeys bray. :) it's funny how after a while you can tell which rooster is crowing. They have different accents. LOL They have a lot of crowing competition out there.

:rant

I need to try that with my dog! He ripped the tarp off the top of his dogpen and climbed out. He thinks he is too dignified for a pen. lol

Sounds like a little hoochie mama to me! LOL

Ahhh give him a stay of execution. :)

I may for a bit....I'm getting old and soft in my old age. We'll see how he fits into the flock or if he has no real purpose...I'm not much one for keeping animals that don't have a real purpose in life (Babe reference..tee hee). Once you pick him up you realize he is all feathers and no meat...I'm thinking that he's been picked on for some time where he came from and it may have been keeping him from getting to eat much with that gimpy hip and all. His breast bone is pretty sharp...sort of like BUD when he first came here.

We'll put some fat and meat on him and then re-evaluate his roll....if he will have one or be ON one.

No one got hurt in the Spade's tournament and much fun was had by all. Tomorrow...a new fencing solution to the rooster pen that should be a permanent fix to keep randy birds in and floozy birds OUT.

Well...I have a gimpy hip (or two) and knee (or two), eat too much and don't generally have much of a purpose but I'm glad I'm allowed to stick around. LOL I know what you mean, I didn't use to be so soft hearted either. I don't know what happened! lol

I'm glad there were no serious injuries during the tournament and very glad you all had fun. :)
