Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Btw, Bee... If I were to look where you are located on a map or google earth, where would I find you ? I know you said you're in WV, but what part of WV do you reside ?

Wow...that's a hard one. You really can't see our house on Google Earth...truly.

I've tried. I live near~but not in~ a little place that is unincorporated, which means there are a few houses clustered together along the river and folks used to live in them, but very few now do..it's called Freeport. About 20 mi. east of larger town of Parkersburg, WV.

Rodneys comb looks really good!!!

Hope everyone is ready for this next wave of artic cold. Forcaster said for the rest of January!! OMG!!!! I can't handle THAT. A few days maybe. I sure don't remember it being this stinkin' cold in all my years.

Thanks, Arielle ! Looks like this cold is going to hit everyone in the Northeast and beyond. I'm in NS, Canada and we get what you guys get, usually. I'm so not looking forward to any more cold and snow. It has been so nice here for over a week and now it's going to go back to frigid temps and snow.

I didn't really need to know the exact location, don't want you to think I'm a creeper LOL :gig :lau. Just wanted to know what the name of the town is more or less. I like to know where ppl are from so I can put a place to ppl when they refer to where they live by saying things like, "home" or "here" or "where I live". Guess it's my nosey side lol. Thanks for telling me, Bee ! :D

I have been fermenting my feed since a year ago last October. Every since I started fermenting their feed I have a nice dark orange yolk :)

I bought some eggs from an Amish lady a few days ago to compare to mine. Her birds were free ranging in her yard - right now mine are pretty much in their run. Her yolks might have been just a little bit more orange but her whites were really runny. I don't know if it is a breed thing or what but her eggs were rough looking - actually rough texture to the shells, all kinds of spots and specks, different sizes and a couple of huge huge eggs. I'll be glad when mine are out of their pen to free range. I would choose my ff eggs over hers.

You wont want my cats either-- they dont touch a mouse or chick in the house. :th We have been catching 1 mouse a day in the house. I am ready for d-con-- unless some one has a better idea. THe catch and rellease is not working!

"Catch and release" HA!?! Catch in a mouse trap and release (toss) out the back door never to return! hahahaha Peanutbutter is good to catch them with. I tried some ff - have to see if they go for it. I thought about feeding them to the chickens, but I'm too chicken - afraid they will catch some horrible mouse disease. LOL

I only use live traps, b/c I feed them suckers to my chickens, free protein!

is anybody fermenting alfalfa pellets?

I mix the alfalfa pellets in with my fermented feed. It works really well and the pellets break down really fine so it makes the feed look green. The birds don't seem to care what color the feed is. They just care how fast I can get it into the feeders for them. I also soak it overnite for my horses, it gets really warm by the time I feed it to them. The horses and birds are really appreciative of that warmth with the cold we have had off and on.
