Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Kassaundra I have let my hair grow out the last year & pigtails are my favorite way to wear it. Keeps it out of my face and cleaner when I am doing work around the house or coop. So much cooler also and my hair doesn't frizz. I have curly hair so wearing it down during the summer leads to "big hair" when the humidity is high. (Think troll doll hair) :D

Ohh Kassaundra, you know you want to suck on those toes! hahaha

...perdy pics btw.

Bahahaha Yea, I'm able to laugh again. We've all been down with the crud the past few days. Explosive everything. ha Slept 12 hrs last night so I guess that I'm on the mend. About time.

And my mouse died so I'm have to use the little scrollie thingy and I hate that. Slows me down a bunch.

I've got some mice in my garage you can have. LOL I need a cat - a cat that doesn't run from dogs because my dog loves to chase anything that will run.

I'm glad you are feeling better. There seems to be a lot of that going around.

TW, like I mentioned before, I did alfalfa cubes for a while with much success... Until the mold started. It didn't start until the weather got cold and I switched containers, though so who knows.

I have proceeded with the chopped fermented hay for my chickens experiment. The chickens don't wanna eat the hay, I think at nearly 3 inches I chopped it way too long. It's still pretty "stiff", too and I am thinking of ways to soften it up further. I will be removing the hay and putting it out for the chooks and then chopping in a new batch MUCH shorter this time. I am thinking 1 inch or less, like the alfalfa cubes.

The scoby collects on the stands of hay and it is all gross and white and filmy. I think mold growing on this is going to be the biggest problem and maybe keeping it submerged might work better. We'll see what it looks like with shorter hay. :p

Also some of my pullets are definitely laying. I am almost back up to one egg a day now, so that's something at least!

I have some hatching eggs coming in to try out my new incubator. One of the chicks will be sold to my BFF's crazy mother. That'll cover over half the cost of the eggs so I am not complaining since I wanted these birds anyhow!

I wonder if pellets would work better than the cubes... I wonder if just wetting them would be best. Ohhh experiments experiments (sigh). lol

Miss K, those are some mighty healthy, beautiful birds in those pics....even the NN ones!

Such bright eyes and good coloring, smooth feathering and alert faces. It's good to see pics of such healthy specimens. Thanks for the pics!

Yes they are in with my other grains fermenting away.

Cool. I read something the other day that said something about making them 2% of the ration. Have you read anything about limits on the amount? How long have you been fermenting them? Do they make a difference in your yolks?

CM, you might could take a bucket lid and trim it to fit down inside the bucket, drill some holes in it then weigh the alfalfa down with that. Put a brick on it or something.
