Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Well, today I managed to get the chooks to come out in driving snow! Crazy that! And I have a day-old baby rabbit squeaking at me from under my hair because it got out of the nest and was chilled. I am happy about the snow... It will insulate the coop and it will keep the temps higher closer to the ground. We will be dropping below 0 again this week. :| And all my eggs are coming to me frozen until they burst!

I'm glad I insulated my nest boxes with thick cardboard and then applied a huge wall of hay on all sides except the front~makes it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter for sure. I don't get any frozen eggs unless they are left there overnight.

I had to cancel my trip to the workshop with Coral and Kassaundra. With my health problems, I would be crazy to get on a 10 hr bus trip at my age. I didn't think I would have much trouble until I got sick and realized I was old. Hum...

You were doing a workshop with those ladies???? How cool! I'd love to have an opportunity for that. I'm sorry you couldn't go.

If you get a chance in the future, could you video anything for us? I'd love to see this up close and in real time...the vids on YT are not real well done and you really can't see what is really going on.

I am so sorry you didn't get to go. You are NOT old. Bad weather is hitting everywhere, you are being cautious.

Lisa :)

LOL oh my gosh what a hoot just hate you got scratches though. Your chickens sound like my chickens. I think they'd eat my arm if they got half a chance. lol They're wild! They try to hop up IN the pan or bucket when I come in the door. I have to gentle kick them back with my leg. I was putting a saddle on one of the hens the other day and I had one to jump up on one of the arms of the chair checking out what was going on. They outta control! OH and the reason she has a saddle is to protect her raw skin from frostbite and the roo from clawing her with his claws since she has or they have naked areas.

Hey there Rose. Yep, chickens can be craaaazy. lol I was lucky, only got a small scratch. I hope your hens get their feathers back soon. Bad time of year to be going around half nakey! LOL

That crazy rooster has got the stick, the rake, the foot, etc. He soon forgets and we have to do it all over again. I don't know what his deal is. This road he's on may lead to lemon-pepper. LOL

If you want a broody hen you can have mine! Copper the Boring (one of three BAs in my flock who all went broody last year) went broody three times last year. The last time she went broody and stayed broody in the broody buster for 2-3 weeks, finally layed an egg, rejoined the flock and was broody again in 24 hours. Then she sat for 3 MORE weeks until I got her eggs.... And then she hatched those out successfully and was raising them quite nicely until the local cats ate them. Broodiest brat ever! It would be great.... If I had any sort of rooster or easy access to hatching eggs. 9_9 If I move south west I could live right next to Meyer Hatchery.... But right now they're quite the drive.

I have also been getting some eggs recently... All frozen, mind. We also had one that was cracked in half and eaten by the chooks. Not cool guys! Hoping it cracked from being frozen and they just ate it while I was gone for 48 hrs this week even though I put down lots of food.
I'll take her!!! hmm... now how tod o pick-up? LOL!!! Just kidding!

I know it is old, but makes me laugh EVERY TIME

A RETIREE'S LAST TRIP to Food Lion

Yesterday I was at my local Food Lion buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think I had an elephant?

So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time,
but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here
that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stopped to Pee on a Fire Hydrant and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard.

Food Lion won't let me shop there anymore. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the World to think of crazy things to say. Forward this (especially) to all your retired friends...it will be their laugh for the day!
Boy did I need that today!!!! That was great!

oh me to on them getting some feathers soon! I am beginning to think they have started molting because I'm seeing a lot of feathers. In the spring they will be a year old.
