Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

It's warmer here tonight..it's only 12*, feels like 4*....practically a heat wave! It never got above 12 today but my group were out in it, soaking up what sun they could and traipsing through the snow like it was a sandy beach. Tough chickens. I only went out one time today and thought my lungs would turn to ice!

It's good to be getting eggs again...makes a person feel rich.

Hehe! My chooks were out yesterday in 8 degrees with a -6 windchill. Last night dropped to -4 or so overnight and the chickens did just fine. Some pale tips on the combs but nothing that looked bad or serious. I guess my coop is built pretty well and the chickens are pretty tough! The pullets are all starting to get bigger combs... I think hormones might be on the rise, but the same thing has happened with all the hens I have gotten. I get them, feed them for a while and they manage to get big beautiful combs from nothing. The hormones would certainly explain the eggs from my girls, however few they still are, though!

I know it is old, but makes me laugh EVERY TIME

A RETIREE'S LAST TRIP to Food Lion

Yesterday I was at my local Food Lion buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

What did she think I had an elephant?

So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time,
but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here
that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stopped to Pee on a Fire Hydrant and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard.

Food Lion won't let me shop there anymore. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the World to think of crazy things to say. Forward this (especially) to all your retired friends...it will be their laugh for the day!

OOOOHHHHHH!!!!!! RachaelS, I wish you could have seen the looks on my dogs' faces when I fell out of the chair laughing so hard I was crying!!! This is the funniest story I have read in a looooooooong time!!! I think this is a Facebook post!!!

! The funniest part is the dog's name was originally Jake, just like Bees, I swear, I copied and posted as it was sent to me!

Well, last night's cold snap has worked another miracle....7 eggs from 9 hens today!

It jumped from 4 eggs a day that started on the last coldest day and continued until yesterday, then today I got 3 eggs more for the daily offering. We get another subzero night this winter even the rooster will be laying!!!

I had that to happen last cold snap we got. Never have gotten 15 from my 15 hens yet but did get 12 and 11 the day before. Lasted for several days there to. They're back to 9-10 now. Got one Aussie that takes FOREVER to get her egg laid. I mean AWHILE. I've checked on here like 3x before to see IF she's laid it yet and she was STILL on it. Anyway we're in for some more cold weather to.

Oh me, that would be like driving with half a dozen kids in the backseat! Nooo thank you! hahahaha Well the decision has narrowed a little bit today. Aussie roo is in time out again...sigh. I had the dog in the pen with me and just wondered if he would find it in his heart to protect his master should that big mean bird try to kill her again. NOPE, he ducked for cover when the rumble went down. Sissy dog, gonna put a pink skirt on him! He would have ran clean out of the county if he hadn't been locked in. hahahaha Crazy chickens... I cought another mouse in the garage and I forgot I had layed it on top of the ff in the bucket to give to the chickens. I sat the bucket down to scoop the ff out and a pullet saw that mouse. She let out a raptor scream and I'm telling you she snatched it out of that bucket and took off! hahahaha There was a big brawl over that mouse - one time three pullets had hold of it tearing it apart. LOL They ran over the dog, under the dog, ran the dog all over the pen and got into a scrap by my feet and left a scratch on my leg! Dang!!! No wonder I don't ever see any mice at their coop! Hmmm...now I wonder about snakes. What did I ever do for entertainment before chickens? lol I've got to video these mouse wars.
LOL oh my gosh what a hoot just hate you got scratches though. Your chickens sound like my chickens. I think they'd eat my arm if they got half a chance. lol They're wild! They try to hop up IN the pan or bucket when I come in the door. I have to gentle kick them back with my leg. I was putting a saddle on one of the hens the other day and I had one to jump up on one of the arms of the chair checking out what was going on. They outta control! OH and the reason she has a saddle is to protect her raw skin from frostbite and the roo from clawing her with his claws since she has or they have naked areas.
