Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Hi everyone. Bee, Are you out there? I have an 8 week old pullet with a messed up leg. I'm guessing that one of the 3 week older pullets trampled her when she was on the ladder or something. Her ankle joint is very swollen and her foot is splayed out to the side. I called the only vet here known to take good care of chickens and was told: $65 to be seen, $150 for two x-ray views, $85 for anesthesia, plus whatever charges for whatever treatment the examination decreed. That wasn't going to happen. So first I taped the feet closer together to see if that would help. It didn't. Then I wrapped it with gauze soaked in an anti inflamatory salve. Didn't help. Maybe I should have culled her from the getgo, but dumb me I bring her inside and now she is a "house chicken"! I finally talked to a Dr. who said I should pull it straight and see what happens. It is her ankle joint, not broken, but like pulled ligaments and tendons. She can't walk on it, but is healthy and eating well otherwise. I'm thinking, have someone hold her and say, "It's like having a baby, it'll only hurt for a little while!" Ha! Anyway, have you seen this and have a clue what to do? Sure could use some advice. THX. :(
I'm not Bee, but I hope its ok for me to speak up.

I would follow the vets advice. Try to pull it straight to get the tendon back in place. If it pops and you feel it go right, I would then wrap it with vetwrap. For an 8 week old to suddenly slip a tendon, she must have been landed on when someone jumped off the perch. How long has she been like that? Is her ankle STILL swollen? Maybe try putting ice on it to reduce swelling and pain first and then if you can't get it to pop into place, I'd definitely cull her.

Its really common in bloodstock.... Though Thoroughbreds its against the law. They can use AI but it has to be followed with live cover... I am sure there are others that dont allow registration of the stock. Its really common for imported Warmbloods. Because so many of them come from Europe and NewZealand.... Bringing a horse to the US is big big bucks and carries a physcal risk factor. Shipping embryos not so much.... Comparatively.

In the Quarter Horse arena, embryo transfer in the US is used so that mares can continue their careers in the show ring.

Thanks!!!! Funny how implanted embryos are common in cows and horses... really makes me shake my head!
It's amazing the lengths they have taken this. I have a cousin that is into high-end Brahman cattle and he is currently birthing out a clutch of calves from a multi-time National winner. All the calves will be heifers. The cows lines matched with this particular bulls lines are known to produce top-end maternal offspring so the semen was (I forget the term) processed to select out only what would produce females and farmed out to recip cows. They are being born at this time and he should finish up with about a dozen. 5 of these embryos sold for $20,000/ea. I'm not particularly fond of this type of practice methodology but it's where science is at and if that's your "game" then it's out there.

hmmm.... that's some expensive cowses.

Does he eat them? Milk them? What's the purpose of his cows?

I don't think I could afford to eat beef or drink milk from those cows!

And it's like dogs - pay so much for a purebred dog when a good mutt is usually better in many ways, especially health-wise! OY! I guess I have to be put in the boat of "too cheap to have that hobby" category. I mean, if the world economic system collapsed, You could do a lot with a motley crew of chickens... but what could you do with 12 identical sister cows without a bull around?

Okay, enough of my rant about high-falutin' cows and genetic folly!

Hi, I've been right here! My son came up from Mexico for a week and turned my house upside down! He set my computer up so I could skype with my only grandchild in Tahiti. In so doing he totally screwed up my PC. I had to pay my geek to come take all the viruses out and all the extra unwanted crap that showed up voluntarily. I really couldn't do a thing with it, except of course, skype! It is still running exasperatingly slow but I will deal. I still haven't caught up with the threads yet, may never. Youall manage to say so much in so little time! Right now I am getting babies cleaned up so when the guy comes to buy them on Weds. they will look good. I'm hoping to sell maybe 20. This guy wants a whole flock at one sale and he knows I take good care of my "kids" because he is the one who sells me my chicken feed. I am avoiding pulling on my chicks leg. Bee, thanks for the girl's address. She only has done spraddle-leg and bumble-foot. I hvae to bite the bullet. I did like being reminded that chickens are stoic and she won't complain too much if the pain is terrible. I'll be back with the results. :) beverly

The good bulls would be found in a big stainless steel jug cold chillin' on dry ice. LOL The cheaper bulls will be wandering around seeing if the bulls in the jug did their job or not, hoping he didn't. LOL Cattle performance can be so precisely studied that they can know which is the very best of the best and breed for that. It is just like champion dogs, horses, etc. - BIG MONEY! Except these champions are bred for the best performance ending in food -not the high priced champions of course, but their later offspring.

Hey ladies, well I made it through my first "culling".

Not near as bad as I expected. Jennifer my buddy, was extremely in depth and caring for me. I did not use the axe. Later on when I do my own it will be with a cone and knife. She skinned hers. She did the first and got the head of the 2nd. Then I took over and completed it. She still had to help with the pulling on the feathers. I have no stamina after getting sick and I went to the Dr. this morning and they took 5 vials of blood. I was pooped when I completed it. Gotta build up my strength. The two roos finished out at about 3 or so lbs. She had a very nice set up at her backyard. with a 6 ft ladder over a trash can next to the table. Chop and drop to drain. I feel very empowered now that I have finished one. Got my feet wet.

Congratulations on getting your feet wet.

5 vials of blood? Are you okay? I can't believe you felt like culling after that. Hope you get to feeling better!

Lisa :)

I just went to the Dr to get my scripts filled. I didn't know that they were going to do the blood thing. Wiped me out. Love knowing that I can do this with the chickens. I didn't have the ewwww factor at all. Thank goodness. Just like cutting up a chicken.
