Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Morning all, just got off my state la thread and there is a newbie that has a new chick with a swollen hip or something. So she's got it at work today and is laughing about taking a $5 chick to a $200 vet visit. I didn't want to make a newbie feel bad but it just about killed me to not say "Are you crazy!" And I may still do it.

Edited for content: Ok I couldn't stand it. So I told her to not waste her money on vet bills. Always going to be accidents and she'll go broke at the Vets. Survival of the fittest. I may get some flak but who cares.

Well I lost another little delaware last night. I think he was the one that got stuck in the FF before I changed out to a better bowl. I tried to catch it but lost in the crowd. It was 40 this morn in the storeroom. Others are happy and hungry.

It's in the 30s here this morning and when I went up to feed one of the meatballs was out in the main coop, running around. He had found a hole in my hay bale wall, which was promptly stuffed with hay to seal the gap and he was placed back in the brooder. Goes to show how tough these little meaty chicks can be...who knows how long he'd been out?

The thing is that most people on this forum view their chickens as pets and they are used to treating all pets at the vet for anything that happens to them. The vets, on the other hand, are laughing all the way to the bank because they know that little chicks pop out of that shell....and take a look around for the best place to die.

No flak from me... I don't think I could have held it in, either!

Got a question for you guys. I bought crushed oyster shells and the things are huge. My chickens just will not eat them they are so large. Went to Tractor supply to get dog food this evening and noticed they have some on sale. Look all over the store and never did find a bag. Asked 2 different people and one tells me it's showing they have 3 bags but he couldn't find them. So here I am a good 30 plus miles away from this store and wont be able to just ride back up there tomorrow to try and get a 5 dollar bag of oyster shells.

said they might get in some more in the next day or so.
So tonight, (got home dark time almost) I go out there with the hammer to see IF I can hack them to pieces so they could have some oyster shells. I did manage to break some of them up.

Are most all of the oyster shells like this? This is the only bag I bought and am needing some more and would like to have a brand I wont have to hammer to pieces for the girls to be able to eat them. Can't keep them in their eggs shells 24-7 so they GOTTA have some calcium from some where with the eggs these little ladies are producing.

Still digging and looking for other resources for calcium and found this. http://www.poultryindustrycouncil.ca/pdfs/factsheets/fs_133.pdf

Not sure if most are like what your talking about but not all are the way you described I bought a bag a while back ( don't recall the brand) and most of the shells were fine. So, hope is not lost and you'll find something that works for you. I am not sure how smart this is but I used to water down some milk for them to drink to increase their calcium intake - but only every once in awhile
