I'll be looking for one of those since it has the 2 thingys I'll be able to hand it across my bucket for drainage.

I got to thinking I use to have one of those, wonder if I gave it away. Nope i found it underneathe cabinet, have my ff draining now.

Here's what I use to scoop out the FF:

Not that brand or look exactly, mine has a cheap plastic handle, but you get the idea.
I just resently got one at a garage sale that is in stainless steel, so if you find that the metal gets eaten through and still want to use one like it just be aware that the ss type is out there. I have no idea on the brand new cost but with it being ss its probably a bit high for just ff. But if you did get it, it could always be taken back to the kitchen if you do decide not to use it for ff. I am really loving mine. I will now be on the look out at garage sales and 2nd hand stores for another.

Thats right I know it's probably not ss since it has a plastic handle, but if I wash it right after draining the ff do you still think it may eat it?

First time doing FF here and I'm already confused. About 17 hours ago I mixed starter feed with water and a couple of glugs of ACV with mother. I used Bee's system of two buckets one inside the other, but I didn't have two the same size. The bottom bucket was shaped a little different and so the inner bucket didn't set in all the way to the bottom. Anyway, when I tried to put in enough water to cover the feed, it kept getting absorbed. Probably more to due with the small size of the feed rather than the bucket not setting in right, but either way I had to keep adding water. Nothing is happening yet, no bubbles or film. It looks awful soupy. I'm thinking I've put in too much water. Question: How do I correct this? Can I add more feed or do I have to start over? Thank you.

Nothing to correct, you don't have to much water. Depending on temps and several other variables it can take a couple of days to get a good bubbly ferment going.

My guess is that it will probably eat it slowly even if you rinse it each time. I doubt that it will affect the safety of the feed though. As long as your not leaving it in the ff when you walk away, I would think that it would be more a matter of how long it will last. I was just letting people know that there is the ss so if they want to use this type of strainer (which is working great for me) just to keep a look out.

I found a nice link for making ACV 3 different ways with some information from "The Chicken Vet" on the costs/benefits of using ACV with chickens. I don't think anyone in this thread has linked to this site yet: http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/07/make-raw-apple-cider-vinegar-acv-with.html

I have some neighbors that gave us a couple of gallon jugs of fresh pressed unpasteurized apple juice. So, I am going to make some practically free ACV with it. My question is related to the mother in my Braggs ACV. I don't actually see the mother, so when I am mixing my Braggs ACV into my apple juice, will it still make ACV even though I don't see any visible "mother" in my Braggs? My guess is that it will make ACV just fine, but I'd love some confirmation from someone who has done this before.

Thanks!

Nice link. I really like the mother raft with the toothpicks. I am making ACV for the first time this year and while I am not using Braggs brand, the ACV that I bought did have the mother in it and was unpasteurized. It was just a tad cloudy AC. No visible mother really. It is working great so I would think as long as the ACV says it has the mother and that its unpasteurized then it should have the yeasts and bacteria in it to make more. I am using the third recipe more or less except I am using juice from apples I picked. Its starting to smell right and should be ready in a few more weeks I think.
