Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Millet is ok to ferment. Millet is NOT Milo. Millet is a teeny tiny seed that's cream colored to reddish. Milo is another small seed but probably at least ten times the size of millet. It usually is a reddish brown in color and very very hard to crack.

chickachee,

milo is grain sorghum, millet is a cereal grain (google)

you really don't need the huge regional menu of all the grains mentioned on this thread, not sure how many birds you are feeding, if only a few you can get wild bird seed mix it has a host of grains in it,,,if you have more than a few birds then using the local "scratch" feed should supply what you want

just my .02
Thanks you guys....

Nice link. I really like the mother raft with the toothpicks. I am making ACV for the first time this year and while I am not using Braggs brand, the ACV that I bought did have the mother in it and was unpasteurized. It was just a tad cloudy AC. No visible mother really. It is working great so I would think as long as the ACV says it has the mother and that its unpasteurized then it should have the yeasts and bacteria in it to make more. I am using the third recipe more or less except I am using juice from apples I picked. Its starting to smell right and should be ready in a few more weeks I think.
I have Braggs and Vita cost ACV both with Mother, I shake it real good before I pour. I am making ACV with Mother using the recipe that was on here. using plain ole store bought ACV and adding Braggs to it. I put about 1/2 cup Braggs and then I a paper towel over the top secured it with a rubber band and stuck it inside a dark pantry. This is a gallon jug of ACV I am using to make it. I asked about covering it and no one replied so I went ahead and did it anyway. It's been going for about a week now. Better go look at it just in case it may be about to explode.

Thanks, my husband found it. I guess I am going to go with my gut instinct and give it a go. From everything I have read on this site, too, it sounds like it should work. Thank you for sharing your process. I already make kombucha and that has been fairly easy, so I'm thinking that making ACV should not be any more difficult. I will be interested to hear how yours turns out, Tivona.

i got to mention this here. if you have any question if fermented feed is worth it, the answer is yes. i switched back to mash feed this week because it is getting cold.
holy magugooie. they have gone through 80 lbs of feed compared to 50. the water intake has tripled and the area is a mess full of poo. it is going to take me at least 10 days to get this under control. you live , try you learn. back to fermenting.

pigeon guy. i like your recipe . i am going to try it. i will let you know the results.

Looks like just the thing that I need. I can't use a spoon to stir mine as it is too thick and always bends my spoon. So, I reach my arm way down to the bottom of the bucket and mix all the old in with all the new. Only takes a couple minutes so no big deal on the effort part but man does it make my arm itch! I've developed a rash from about 6 inches above my wrist to mid bicep area and only on the inside/back of the arm. Weird! I wash it off as soon as I can too but still... that rash is there, and every morning and every evening I get to aggravate it some more!

What is that contraption called?

It's a paint mixer that attaches to a power drill - you can get them at any hardware or paint store.

Yeah - I was doing the sticky arm thing too. I'd crouch down on the floor and stick my arm to the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. It was like assisting calf birth (actually Ive never done that myself - just assisted the assister) And it still was not mixing well. This thing does an awesome job. I can do it standing up and it's mixed perfectly. Just takes a couple of seconds per bucket, then rinse it off.

Work smarter, not harder...

WOW quite a difference. Please do give results. Experimenting is fun.

Off topic and I don't know if this is where I should post this, but I started a little experiment.
Hopefully I'm not mistaken, but I think I remember Bee saying something somewhere about giving ACV to her dog. I wondered if it would do anything for my cat, so I added just a little bit to her water. She is quite healthy already; very active and has the softest, glossiest short-hair coat of any cat I've ever touched (and I touch a lot of cats volunteering at the animal shelter.) But holy monkey CRAP her poop stinks!! It's so bad that when she goes in her litter box we can't even go in our bed room, much less the bathroom where the litter box is, for at least 30 minutes. We feed her Iams because that's the best we can afford, but it does have some corn products in it. I didn't think I could ferment her food or that she would even eat it if I did, but I wondered if adding some good bacteria would at least help just a little. At first I put too much and she wouldn't drink it, but I diluted it until she wasn't suspicious anymore. It's been a week since I smelled any death-catpoops, so maybe something's working! ....or just a weird coincidence, but I'll take it
