Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

The treatment consists of raising core temps to simulate a fever, thus rushing white blood cells to the source of the invasion(in this case, a cold virus) so they can kill it off naturally.  It has to be done properly or it is just ineffective...much like free ranging...and people then claim it simply does not work for them because they half-a$$ed it and expected it to work the same as it does for me.  :D

Alright.. How do you increase your temp? Long hot bath?

And what is this about free ranging? How do you do that incorrectly :p

Ask all those folks losing birds to hawks...they can tell you.

For the further synopsis on poor free ranging and what breeds to use, go to the road less traveled thread...just posted that there.

For increasing core temps and the rest of the treatment: Take a very, very hot bath(NOT a shower) while drinking a very hot drink(yes, simultaneously) until you just can't stand the heat any longer. Get out of the tub before the water cools...if you have to, keep replenishing the hot water. Dry off briskly in your hot, steamy bathroom. Apply Vicks to chest and the bottom of your feet. Yes, the bottoms. Apply warm, thick socks. Apply warm thick clothing, like a sweat suit. Do not wash your hair or have a wet head from the bathing. Apply a toboggan if you can stand it. Go immediately to bed under as many blankets you can stand and bundle them tightly around your body. Let no heat escape.

It always helps me to take a Benadryl before this so that I can sleep through most of this bundling in the bed portion. Keep bundled and hot until you are sweating like the dickens...and stay bundled for as long as you possibly can. The next day drink three full glasses of orange juice spaced throughout the day, and drink the same for the next three days.

On the first day you will feel about 50% better than you did the day before. The second day you will feel about 75% better than you did before the treatment started. On that third day you will feel back to business and feel good, but keep drinking that OJ anyway.

This has worked for me and my kids on numerous occasions and it has sound physiological reasons that it works. I really don't care about how it works, though, I just know that it does. During that time you can help with over the counter cold meds for coughs and sniffles, a vaporizer at night, etc..that's just good common sense, but they won't take away the cold as viruses normally have to run their course. This treatment just speeds up that course a little.

That's how a nurse kicks a cold when doctors are 20 mi. away and you don't have any medical insurance anyway...you just take care of things at home.

Here's a copy of another post of mine on free ranging...from the free ranging thread. When someone posted they thought you just let the chickens out the door of the coop when you free ranged and that was all there was to it. This same person has lost whole flocks to free ranging and claims that it cannot be done safely....

Didn't realize people were that naive

I have been free ranging since the beginning, and bought an LGD to ward off predators. Works like a charm. Though they are no good for Arial predators. The roosters are the eyes on the sky and I see them call everyone to cover frequently. In these cases, I am very thankful for the densely wooded area a few feet from the barn.

Also - I free range the silkies as well. They also duck for cover when the roosters sound a call.

It would be so great to be able to get a trained LGD at 2 years old. I would pay big bucks for a poultry trained LGD instead of having to do the work myself :p My girl is 9 months old, and ignores them all. It took us a very long time to get where we are.. Still would not trust her unattended.
