Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I had overnight guests with one of my daughters and husband. I uncovered my FF bucket to proudly show off this great chicken food stuff and they held their noses and gasped!, "No wonder they like it! They are getting drunk on it!" , said my son in law. I almost choked in laughter!

It smells good to me. Pickly. My husband and daughter and son in law tell me it smells very strong and they don't like the smell. Weird.
Here's the best part. My chickens are crazy for it. They gobble it up like piggies at the trough. They look and act like the picture of health. That's all I need to be convinced that it is good for them. The new pullets have been on it a week and already they look fuller, redder in the face, and ready for the rooster! Oh yeah...Forgot to mention...Johnny met the girls for the first time today through a barrier fence. Love is in the air...Let's just say it won't be long before these girls and guy have a date.

I got a small amount of beef fat today & a lot of pork fat. Do you see any harm in using the pork fat when making hen suet cakes? I didnt think what type of animal fat I used would matter. What do you think Mumsy?

Fat is fat. During cold and dirty weather fat will get your birds engine's revving. That's a good thing. I use Scratch and suet as a high octane heat generating fuel for my chickens.

I am excited to try making them tomorrow and see how the hens like them. I got pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and some almonds to put in them :) Plus scratch, corn & boss and a variety with red pepper flakes & garlic for prevention. I just havent figured out how to sneal some ACV in there lol

This sounds like something I will probably be investigating and investing in. We had a lot of frost bitten combs last winter. I'm hoping I have the barn closed up better this year. Suet cakes... Perhaps I could do something like this and give chunks of it for "dinner?"

I make Johnny Cakes for my chickens and other discerning birds. One of the ingrediant's I like to add when my birds need a boost is powdered Buttermilk to the melted suet.


Using suet to melt down as a base, it is easy to add various nutritious ingredient's. I crumble them into the DL. I also will give a cake to individual birds that need a booster of nutrition. I do not see these Johnny Cakes as treats. They can be part of a whole picture of good feeding program.
 
Were those made in a muffin tin? What is the ingredient that everything is sitting in?

I've never really considered making suet before but your comment "high octane,heat-generating tool" definitely got my attention.

Do you have a base recipe you follow and then just add various other ingredients as you can get your hands on them?

Yes. I use an old muffin tin and cupcake papers. And I use a Food Saver vacuum sealer to keep cakes for long term. I have many recipes for various needs. I do a lot of research on poultry nutrition and the various cakes address various things. Everything from moulting to sex drive and egg vitality to cold and winter conditions. I experiment a lot with my own birds. They let me know when I have a winner or a stinker. Funny birds. Everybody is a comedian. News bulletin.... My chickens are not fans of Cod Liver Oil. Hah!
