Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

What am I doing wrong? The following is a picture after 3 days. I haven't gotten any bubbles, no expansion, no smell, nothing. I added about 1/4 cup of ACV to about 6 big scoops of feed and filled with water.

Did your ACV have mother in it? If not then I don't think you have any yeast to get it started and it may take awhile to capture enough wild yeast to get it going but if you're patient it will happen. Make sure you keep it stirred a few times a day.

That is excellent information. I'm planning to do this as well. I'd heard of someone who lactofermented the grain for their birds. Lactofermented is fermented using whey; I like the whey from raw milk kefir that really ferments things well. Kombucha would also be able to start the fermentation. Nourishing Traditions is an excellent book. The Art of Fermentation is wonderful too, it's amazing.

Question for anyone that makes their own ACV by adding storebought to apple juice... How long does it take for the juice to 'vinegarize'? I have some sitting in a bucket on the porch and it smells like vinegar when i open it but doesn't quite taste like it yet. started it February 15th.

I left mine sit in a closet for about 2 - 3 weeks. The smell of it was very strong & fermented my feed quite well. When I stir the FF, it bubbles & pops quite nicely.

greetings

I normally dont jump in and ask a question in a forum without reading the thread but this is a looooong one.

So I want to try fermented feeding for my chooks. I have 36 chickens imported from the USA into the Philippines.

Apple cider vinegar is not readily availablle but a very yeasty alcohol is made from coconut three sap that turns to vinegar in 24 hrs at room temp.

What are thoughts on whether this would work?

Much appreciation

Oz
