Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Wonder how much protein percentage is in snakes? Little Red gulped a 10 in. snake this evening like it was spaghetti and I've seen my other birds do the same. Imagine how much protein is in such things like lizards, frogs, snakes and mice? Wonder why folks who are trying to find extra sources of meat proteins aren't growing mice for their birds?

Some people do, they generally raise "pinkies" for food for chickens and reptiles. It takes up some space and seemed more labor intensive then other things like insects.

Not mine but pics of some.....

And a link to a blog with a how-to:

The only thing I can see wrong with those I have seen is they seem to be planting one type of grass..which is fine if that is all you can get, but chickens are a little selective when out on range and tend to graze on different types of grasses and not just one type. I'd be mixing clover, fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, orchard grass, etc. You can probably find these in a pasture mix at your local feed store...variety is best. In the winter one can use winter wheat or cold weather greens like kale, beets, spinach, etc.

I would also have some frames with a larger mesh wire on top..it would require more supports but it would also allow leafy greens to grow through it more so than the hardware cloth in the pics.

Here are mine and about to be installed in their run shortly. We put them out there this evening so I could get the pine straw raked out of the way and put them down.

We made 3 of them @ 8' long and 4' wide and one is 10' long and 4' wide with hardware cloth on them. Chickens checking them out. They sure are some nosy boogers!

Man, oh, man, Rose! If a person could love a chicken run, I sure do love yours! It's HUGE and has all that deep litter of the perfect kind going on, with the stumps and now the grow frames? Chicken paradise if a bird has to be in a confined run. And..btw..your birds are looking so good!

Thank you!!! Going to shortly add more DL to the run. They can still get at the bottom when they stir it up. So going to add more so the bottom can stay put if I am remembering right that's how it's suppose to be right? I threw them some BOSS in it this evening and they were really shuffling the DL around.

Holy guacamole! Speaking of frogs and snakes and other creepy things... One of my dogs was barking a little bit ago and I went out to see what the deal was. False alarm, just the dog that loves to hear herself bark... I think. BUT... I don't know what kind of frogs and other critters are down at the pond but I wouldn't walk down there in the dark for $100!!! It sound like a dang jungle out there! I was glad to come back in the house! LOL **FREE FROGS & SNAKES** PLEASE come get them! LOL And to think as kids we use to play hide-and-seek outside in the dark. Creeps me out to think about it!

WOW GOOD price! Our is 10 -11 bucks a qt. here! I just get the Heinz at Walmart. I'd thought they stopped carrying it but FINALLY found it again the other night and bought two bottles of it. You can actually pour that into a gallon on the regular ACV I have heard and let it sit for awhile and make even more for less. I am trying that now.

I'm trying that too but I' not quite sure of the results. Dang yours is high. I thought $16 was bad. lol We could make our own from apples? :)

Once in a while I'll pick up some cheap frozen apple juice concentrate at the store. I'll mix it up at home and put about a cup of UP/ACV in there (gallon jug) and put a piece of coffee filter over the opening secured with a small rubber band so it can breathe. I leave it to sit in my dark cupboard for a couple of months. Makes it REALLY cheap! I can't say for sure what the acid content is but it works well and smells right.
