Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Title this post " AM I CRAZY"...... In the mornings, I get up, make coffee, wifey's tea and we go out on the porch and watch the sun come up. Come in make her some lunch, and see her off to work. (this is the nutso part) As she goes down the drive I wave, walk up the ramp to the chicken coop open the door and say "good morning girls, looking good", go in get the water jug and say " alright listen up we need more eggs y'all been slacking, there's 8 of you , now I wanna see 6-8 eggs c'mon now get with the program". Go up to the goat haus Call it that just because it sounds cool lol, open their door ( which is also the ramp), back off so's I don't get trampled, and say good morning boy's, they see I didn't bring feed and keep pushing I'm telling them you know how it is you get your feed after I'm properly dressed, get back look out etc. Next I go back to the garage on the house and the meatys are all stirred up so I feed them say good morning they run around in out of the tractor i'm talking get back in there, hey don't do that , leave her alone , now stop that, where's you manners etc..... The critter whisperer, except I don't whisper...... Now I ask you " AM I NUTZ"??? I am kinda glad I'm all alone up here on the hill.

@Bee, us "jeenyusses" here in the US have a way of screwing up a whole lot of things. lol Look at all the vaccinations and medication our own kids "have to have" these days. Amish/Mennonite kids have the best immune systems of any kids in the US and they don't do vaccines and very little medicine. I had a goat that I raised from a baby when I was little. Had that goat for about 10 years. She never had one vaccine, no medication and never was dewormed. She was fat and sassy and I don't recall her ever being sick. I'm sure overseas the majority of those goats are raised like mine was, no vaccines and no medicine unless it would be some kind of natural concoction. I'll have my friend in Pakistan ask some of those who have goats about how they raise them. I am sure it is way different than here. I'm sure over there it is survival of the fittest. I have had a few goats but I am no goat expert. I'm sure nobody would want advise from me. lol Maybe we need to go "over yonder" (overseas) and learn a little something? Animals overseas even tend to me smarter than animals here.

Here is a pic my friend sent me of some goats in Pakistan...

I have a for-real question, does anybody have, or know of anyone that has a "how to make a killing cone" plan. Just need the arcs more or less. there is a you tube vid, but it's pretty "cobby" I like the one in the Vt. "1st video". I know it's store bought but i'm cheap um er "mechanically inclined".

Walt you are going to need a pretty big piece of sheet metal.... or plastic.... I dont have one to measure or I could give you the flat pattern. But Just take a piece of freezer paper and experiment.... Roll it into a cone till it looks to be around the right size then cut the tip off. Till it seems to be the right size. Soo much easier to work with paper or cardboard first.

Once you dink around and get the right shape un roll it and fine tune the pattern. Using a string and a nail you can retrace the arcs onto a clean piece of paper cut it out then roll it up to make sure the pattern is right.

To roll the edges you are going to need a forming tool like a dull chizel or a wide tipped screw driver. You shoul to do this with sheet metal or you WILL get sliced and your bird will get sliced as well. mark off a bout an eighth of an inch around both the curved edges and tap and bend the edge just a little. You only have to get it started. Work around both edges till you have an Ell formed. Then you should be able to finsh crimping the edge down with some flat pliers. once the edge is completely rolled over take a ball peen hammer and hammer it as flat as you can get it.

Then you can roll your cone. plann to have an over lapped seam Wich either can be fastened with rivets from the inside Or you can use a piercing punch .... A nail would work. pierced through the seam and roll the sharp edges on the back with the punch then hammer them flat. With two layres of metal that creates a fastening point. You will have to do this several places.

Or make it out of plastic and you can sew the cone shut with some stainless wire.

Believe me unless you have the tools to work with sheet metal its cheaper in the long run to bite the bullet and buy one.

you know I have only wormed my guys once.... Ivermectin paste for horses..... one tube and they LOVED it. I calculated out the dosage and once they smelled it they mugged me for it. I think with all things there is a point of being good caretakers and using common sense with our animals or going over to the darkside for animal care.....

I know you wont be convinced and you dont need to.... and I wont be raising goats for meat either.... Just thought I would throw that out there.

Now that's one of those "AHA" moments. 2 gallon huh? gotta get me some.

Couldn't find emotion icon slapping forhead

Wayy better n making one out of sheet metal.... though Me thinks those jugs could be a bit taller... But heck its for restraint of the wings and holding the bird in position....

And if it wears out or rips just make a nother.... way cool.

Oh, I'm convinced...my family has had goats. We just didn't medicate them like folks are doing now and they were hardy enough to live without all the foofaraw. A person needs to treat them like any other livestock and cull for hardiness and parasite resistance to get a good animal, just like with any other specie.

If the jugs were taller, the birds can get their feet down in them and lever their bodies out. You are looking at a 10 lb bird in those cones and the 15 lb birds fit in them pretty much the same way...you need those legs hanging out in just that manner so that when they kick there is nothing to kick against.

Yep. And now that hair sheep are growing in popularity because of their natural parasite resistance people are getting them and, guess what? They are feeding them grain and medicating them like they do their wool breeds and slowly but surely changing the natural hardiness of these breeds to fit the US ag paradigm of livestock production and soon there won't be a hair sheep worth having in this land.
