Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

My crumbles are in a Rubbermaid tub made fresh every day.... I was having NO trouble with draining in my colander but the tub wasn't draining so I added about 30 holes close together to mimic the colander. It drains great now. I just lift it out and set it sideways on the lower tub, all the holes are in the middle and it drains out in an hour while I eat breakfast and care for the dogs and rabbits.

In other news Summer is trying to stay past it's appointed time this year. It is 90's out right now.

I do the same thing! In fact I plop it from more of a height than I really need to just to get that "yuck" look to it and then say "UMMMMM Look tasty!" Guess we have to entertain ourselves somehow.

Yep...not me either.  I've never been overly afraid of heights but my body is sensing something there that my mind is not.  My DIL has lived in the mountains all her life and is just now getting very much increased anxiety symptoms while traveling over them...just this past year.

I think of the Earth as much like a tall reed or similar supple item that when moved at the base doesn't move as much as the tallest section, so if the base it moving even a little, the uppermost projections and those projections built onto the base are going to see more movement than if one is standing at the base.  I think those tectonic plates are shifting a good bit more lately and when we are in a high place or in a building that is high, we are feeling it more.

I normally get motion sickness pretty easily, so when I start to feel the same thing when I'm standing or sitting still, I know that something is moving and it ain't me!  Gotta be where I'm standing or sitting.

I first noticed it while in chuch. I can't stand up with my eyes closed without weaving like a drunk person, can not do it and don't even try anymore. And if I am not touching anything or holding on to something, can't look up for any amount of time with out starting to weave. Oh yeah, the plates are pretty active, more than ever before. I don't live very far from the New Madrid Fault line. There are small earthquakes all along it every day. Usually they are small enough that nobody feels them but they are picked up by their detection equipment. One of these days this thing is going to split this country wide open! The last one I felt was a few years ago. I was sleeping on a mattress on the floor so I got the full effect of the shake. That will wake you up! LOL I don't know what website it is but all the earthquakes picked up around the world are shown daily.

SAME here! I just thought it was my thyroids since they're acting up. In fact last year I got up one morning and the whole room was spinning. I couldn't open my eyes because it was soooo bad. I had to have help to walk and everything. Wound up at the Dr. office and he gave me something to stop it and thank goodness that one was the only really bad time. But yep this is also happening to me. I can't even squat down anymore without falling over backwards or swaying back and forth trying to keep my balance! Some really weird stuff.

Et tu Brute? See? I'm not crazy like my family said! Well...not AS crazy as my family said...

Or it could mean you have nerve and cardio encroachment in your cervical spine....like me. Turn my head to the left or upwards for very long~dizziness, nausea and an instant and lasting migraine.

Which might feel a little rough but nowhere as bad as hell.

1000

I just weighed all 25 of my CX since tomorrow is their 1 month birthday. The average weight is 2.0388. Is this roughly where I should be at this point? I don't want them growing too fast but I do want them to finish somewhere near on time.

They look great!! Much bigger than mine at that age, so I don't know what you are shooting for, but they look as big as most raised on other feed at that age. Time will tell if you grew them too fast.

Okay, I am new to FF, so I have a few questions if yall don't mind. This feed is so huge, I could never read through the entire thing.

1. I am using gallon jars to ferment, but I have about 50 chickens, so it seems I stand at the sink and strain the FF forever. There has got to be an easier way to strain. I know there is a two bucket system, but my feed just dissolves into mush, so how do you poke holes in the inserted bucket, and not have all your feed drain out the holes?

2. I read something about chickens on FF having rough feathers, anyone having that problem?

3. How sour, is too sour of a smell?

4. I have seen where some don't keep water over the top of the feed, they just keep it super moist. Does this work for anyone else. I don't want to get my chickens sick. I just hate all that straining. (I keep my fermenting feed in my closet under the stairs and the temp is always perfect in there).

5. Any tips you could share that you wish you knew when you first started out fermenting. I have a whole chicken group that I am trying to get on board with FF, and any info to pass on is great appreciated.

God bless, and thank you all for sharing your knowledge.
