Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Someone said to spread lime all around in your yard for ticks and fleas. It's the hydranated sp? lime I think is what they called it, said not caustic kind because it will harm the chickens. I don't know IF it works or not but I have been highly considering it because we have deer coming in here all the time and hubby has gotten 2-3 off himself. I guess I keep my legs and feet washed off so much with the water hose that I don't get them on me or if I do they get washed off? Anyway I want to try it so they will either leave OR get killed whichever.

Thank you Rose Marie. Yes I read that somewhere during my searches. I didn't know if it was caustic lime or not. That will definitely be on my list of things to do in the next few days! I hear ya, they need to be GONE!

Let Bee note that it's a very, very last resort when all other things have failed.  :D   Usually things like that are just not necessary in a natural setting but my birds came from a setting that wasn't anything close to being natural and after half a year of trying to help them naturally, I used this stuff early this spring~once was all it took and that is scary all on its own.

But..if you have to pull out the big dogs, I'll use this stuff...only on the birds, on the roost and in the bottom of the nest box.  Not in the litter.  I'll even go so far as to place a dab in their dusting spots over under the brush pile, but not in my litter.  Even organic things can kill some of the bugs I would like to keep around and, though this particular one degrades in sunlight and is supposed to be less harsh than other things we could use, I don't sprinkle it around like fairy dust.

I use pyrethrin spray around the doors to keep spiders out. I was looking at the indredients of the different sprays yesterday. The bug bomb for bedbugs and fleas has pyrethrin in it (.05% pyrethrins) plus other poisons. The spray I use around the doors is a farm spray by Country Vet called CV-80D (.50% pyrethrins). It says you can use it on horses, beef cattle and pigs. The makers of Sevin dust has come out with an insecticide called Worry Free (.10% pyrethrins). Sevin says it will kill 65 bugs, Worry Free says it will kill 250. Worry Free has a 1 day withdraw time on garden vegetables. It says it is an insecticide/miticide. I don't like ANY of them either but I usually use a pyrethrin when I do use one.

I have heard about fermented foods and I am curious if you can use it on layer birds too?

Caroline

Hi Caroline. I use fermented feed on my layers and they look and do great. A let my feed get a little low so mine only got dry feed yesterday sooo... the chick ladies got a little peed at me. They didn't really want to eat it and I only got 3 eggs when I usually get 6-7. Yes it is great for layers! :)

Good, I've got some of that that I use to make my homemade washing powders.

That's why I have some...homemade laundry detergent.

I have also sprinkled sevin in my carpet many years back when we rented and the land lord swapped sofas with us while we were gone over the weekend.

The reason they did this is because it was FULL of fleas and I do mean crawling with them. Hubby wouldn't say anything to them so I just got the sevin and went to town on the thing AND the carpets! When we got home that Sunday night they were crawling up the white walls in there so I put out the sevin all over the place. We didn't have a dog inside then and we knew that's why he did that with the sofa. Get this..... the indoor and outdoor carpet in this WHOLE apartment was black and red mixed together all throughout it. He brings us a pumpkin ORANGE sofa up there. Can you say matching?

Man it looked like, well you get the point. HORRIBLE! BUT I got rid of those fleas! NO WAY I was sleeping up in there with them crawling like they were crawling. I'd never seen soooooo many fleas in all my life in one area. Can you imagine us crawling into bed and waking up with these things all over us? Chills!!!

Boy oh boy, I bet you were happy! lol Ya know, bugs and other creepy things outside are expected but when they come inside this old girl don't like it at all! I have heard a whole lot of people talking about fleas and ticks this summer as well as mosquitos. I know of two places that have recently been infested with fleas this summer due to one infested couch. The couch was moved to one house and infested that place then somebody went there and got them on them and took the things back to their house! It sounds like the tick, flea and mosquito extermination business would be a booming business to go into! And if you could get rid of them "naturally" no telling what kind of money you could make! What gets me about these little vermin is I can't see them! I told my mom I had rather have a dang snake in the house! At least I could look for it and find it or trap it. But these things you can only see by accident or if they get on you and get some blood in them. Funny thing is (if there is a funny thing) every one that I have found latched on to me is dead. lol I suppose it is the Dawn I have been using in the shower... or maybe I am just poison to them. lol

Oh yeah, I like that homemade washing powders. Good plus cheap! Everything I wash these days is getting that detergent, another detergent plus some ammonia! lol
