Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

  Me too!  One year I was hauling a trailer of horse manure to my mother for Mother's Day clear across the state...half of the load was my MD present as well...and before I could even make it to my own home, the wheel shredded on the trailer(the load was WAY to heavy!) and I had to unload the poop in a wide place in the road, take off the wheel, go get it repaired in the closest town, drive back, put on the wheel, load up half the load and take it home, go get the other half and THEN truck it 4 hrs one way to my mother..finally..for her MD present.  It was worth it.    Best garden I ever had that year. 

Good job! LOL The dogfood I feed my dogs comes in sort of plastic bags and I use those to store/tranport poo in. They also make good seat covers. LOL ...actually no they don't - the color eventially rubs off on your pants. Yuck! lol

Okaaay you got me back on that one! LOL ...the lawn mower seat cover or storing the poo? haha Those bags do last a long time and are fairly water resistant.

The lawn mower seat cover! I love it! Wish I had thought of that years ago for my old and decrepit John Deere with the cracked seat and all the foam in it getting wet if I left it out by mistake. And...the look of it surely suits my style. I LOVE the repurposed look in my life and on my land...nothing speaks of wisdom more to me than someone taking something they would ordinarily throw away and turning it into something useful, no matter how it looks. Love it.

If the color didn't rub off on your pants they would work great. But I believe you could turn them wrong-side-out and avoid that. But I guess your pants would smell like dogfood for a little while. All the dogs in the neighborhood would be following you around! LOL That is why I was using it, crack in the lawn mower seat getting my pants wet.

My family is always griping at me for keeping "junk". I don't care, they better just stay out of my junk! lol The other day I took a peanutbutter jar, drilled a bunch of holes in the lid and used it to spread DE. Worked well. I had a small peanutbutter jar I kept in the truck to keep change in instead of it being here and there. Those big square jars that peanuts come in, I store dried beans and rice in those. Maybe I'm a green nerd. LOL

I believe some people are actually making reusable shopping bags out of plastic bags like dogfood comes in. I've got to try that! I believe there are some people on this website selling them.

I had to post some pictures of my flock since the issue of feather condition was recently discussed. I started fermenting my feed a year ago (after finding this thread!) and have to say I don't see anything but good from it. I feed it once a day in the morning since that fits my lifestyle. My flock free-ranges most days and does have access to dry crumbles, although very little is used this time of the year since they are out finding their own fresh food. I keep my bucket in the barn/coop in the summer. When the weather cools, it goes into the attached unheated garage. During the coldest winter weather, it is on the floor of my laundry room. I think my flock is better because I use fermented feed and want to thank you and everyone here for all your information and help.........and with all the other various "flock raisin' wisdom" too!

Below are pictures of two broody hens who look great, even after sitting on eggs for three weeks and the last one is a pullet from this year that was raised on fermented feed.

I really need to get some pictures of my birds. Their colors are really starting to pop. The only real issue is that the roosters in the Camp Freezer-bound coop look so good, I keep thinking I need to keep them!
