Got to read the rooster floggin' thread to get a classic Al and Bee conversation...

:gig Oh, no!  I've been found out!  Okay...I admit it. I've developed rustic burlap chicken diapers I want to market and needed a model for them.  I'm hoping also that I can keep Bertha's saggy butt cleaner if I have a Silkie on hand as TP for the flock.

Burlap... ouch! lol I think you ought to get it. It can be your farm mascot. lol

I'm watching "Madea's Big Happy Family". These people are so funny, they kill me! LOL Uncle Joe told Madea that she had so much "celluleet" that her thighs look like they have hail damage. I'd smack him! LOL

I keep mine in the coop for most of the year and in my bedroom, the coolest room in the house, for the winter months.  I really doesn't cause a smell in my room at all because the ferment action slows down in the cooler temps and I mix smaller batches, so it doesn't reach high fermentation levels to where it stinks badly then.

Yep...$4 for 4 roosters of 6 mo. of age.  That's some very cheap meat there.  I'm going to keep a watch on the locals for just such bargains and slowly fill my freezer.  Everyone else being reluctant to kill a chicken for food is going to pay off well for me.  The DP birds taste better than the CX anyway.  I'll let you all know how this goes!

For some reason the Australorp roos that I put in the freezer taste like game (rabbit or squirrel). Do yalls DP birds taste like that? I hadn't had a homegrown bird in so long I forgot what it tastes like! lol Their meat is pretty dark too.

Sounds like you have a good idea on the birds. I'll have to think on that myself.

Yes, DP birds will taste gamier than CX birds. Their meat is darker, chewier and with more texture. Once you get accustomed to eating real chicken..and that is what real chicken is supposed to taste like, make no mistake...you will think store bought chicken is tasteless and texture~less, and though it is tender and juicy, that's about all it has going for it.

This is one reason I like to take CX to an older age than 8 wks..that's a 2 mo. old chick! Barely old enough to even have a taste to the meat. If you can get CX to an older age, their meat gets darker, a little gamier and with more texture~but not as much as a DP bird...and nigh perfect because it retains the tenderness and juiciness of the younger CX bird.

I watched a video of Allan Savory talking about desertification a couple weeks ago. I tell you, it was very interesting and the man is definitely on to something. He says that it is actually the lack of grazing that causes the problem. I think if people would listen to him it would help solve a lot of problems. It would be great if Savory was the man that your extension office was partnering with.

Nope, not Allan. I saw that vid a while back and totally agree with this guy. He's doing some amazing stuff out there in Africa.

No, my local place is the Great Basin Growers Coop, or something like that. There's a scientist that works there and I need to go pick his brain.

I'm gonna have to do some CX next year. I wanted to this year but I am still getting everything set up like I want it for just my laying flock. I'm getting there slowly. Ahh if I was only 20 years younger. I would have already had all this stuff whipped out like there was nothing to it. lol I need to get set up better before I go into processing any more. I'd also like to have a plucker! Do you use one of those? Do you know how much they cost?

I don't use one for various reasons and I don't know it warrants the expense of one just for home processing needs. They do expedite things quickly but they also damage the carcasses a good bit along the way...at least the ones I've seen do. Plucking these CX is liking wiping the feathers off, that's how easy they come off..just takes time but not much overall effort.

I ended up just skinning my Australorps! lol
