Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Folks are saying to avoid feeds with fish meal in them as the protein source..says it stinks so bad that CSI will be knocking on your door to investigate all the dead bodies you are hiding. Just watch your protein percentages in those prebagged feeds...I've been noticing lately that they seem to be selling feeds to folks with 20% and there isn't a layer alive that needs that level of protein to produce an egg. It can only cause problems over time to feed that high of protein, so if that is all you can get, try cutting that protein down with a lower protein whole grain, like barley, oats or corn. Some mix scratch grains in because it's all those types of stores have of whole grains, so that will work as well, but get that protein down a bit.

This fermentation will utilize every bit of that percentage by converting it to a more complete protein, so it's like taking regular food and turning it into super food for the chickens...so if you are already feeding a high pro feed, it will be like putting rocket fuel in a '64 Dodge Dart. Not necessary at all.

That's larger than a glug...a gulp is larger than a sip, whereas a glug is smaller than a glorp. Somewhere in between a gulp and a glug is a splash. I'm going to have to write this stuff down on a chart, aren't I?

Which is why you can see how these units of measurement are most likely used on a farm....lots of mucking through the wet and muck in muck boots. That brings us to whole other units of measurement....muck, mire, sludge, slop, and soup. But that's a lesson for another day.

Me too Triple Willow......things WILL be getting worse as days go by........pray, pray, pray

Thank you MUCH LOVEIGEE! Yes, things are going to get much worse from here on out. But ohhh one glorious day...! :) Thank you so much for praying for them. They are working so hard and doing so much, even in the middle of one of the worst places for Christians to live. God is using them in tremendous ways.

So I thought I would share my progress on my meat birds fed with ff. I am now at week 6 and have been feeding them ff since the beginning of week 3. I weigh them once a week to track their growth and progress. So I weighed them on Tuesday and my largest bird was 4.56 lbs. The smallest was 3.43 and the average for 24 birds was 4.12 lbs. I am not sure how they can claim that they process 6 lb birds at 8 weeks unless that is live weight. I was thinking it meant processed weight though. They seem healthy and are growing I thought pretty well. They gained about 1.25 lbs since last weeks weigh in.

Tch, tch, tch,  you must bow when you call her that!  :bow

Now that struck me funny!!

Lisa :)

Oh yes but I don't have a "bow button". lol HA! ...She slaps me around all the time about my Storey's Chicken Bible and me bow...? HMM! LOL (just kidding Master Bee. lol)

Oh yeah, I thought there was something wrong with the first roo when I found his chicken nuggets. I thought they had grown a new organ since I had seen one's innards! LOL

TW, I don't keep roos so they wouldn't be fertile. I bought some hatching eggs from a lady up here. XD I live seriously in postage stamp suburb neighborhood. Two streets over the properties have about 800sq feet for the lawns, where as my back yard alone is more than 4000. I'm lucky to have found a whole quarter acre all to my lonesome where I live... But I will not keep roos in this sort of place.

Marans are sort of dual-purpose birds. They're supposed to get from 6-8lbs (hens-roos) fully grown and they lay like 150 eggs/year or some such... The eggs are a bit smaller than many birds, too. They're really more of a fancy breed than a utility breed I think, since they're a bit small for a meatier DP and a bit light on the egg count. But they're very pretty and lay the most beautiful eggs I've ever seen and I've wanted one since I got into chickens.

Next on my list; Easter Eggers and Norwegian Jaerhons! Eventually I'll get me some of those pretty Ayam Cemani too! Someday!

Yeah that's a little light on the egg count but I agree, they lay some beautiful eggs. I'd like to have a couple of those and a couple Easter Eggers too.

Good thing you did get the bigger place. Ya know, I've seen a lot of city folks that I wish had stayed in the city BUT I think you'd fit in well out here in the boonies. I'm afraid the powers that be would try to run me out of town if I lived there. lol
