Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Well I will admit, I do think I would like hair sheep. Thought about getting some. But I love goats! And they are so good for cleaning a place up and keeping it trimmed up. Sheep, do they eat anything in the pasture besides grass? Picky picky picky! And I think goat tastes so much better than sheep. Cute pics for sheep. lol

goats are browsers and sheep are grazers.... Though I hear Hair sheep will browse a little. The reason I wont consider wool sheep is my climate. The best combo for helping with brush control. Goats will walk over sheep love to eat. Sheep are wonderful for keeping lawns groomed.... LOL.

Yep..hair sheep eat what goats eat AND what sheep eat.  And hair sheep doesn't have that heavy, gamey taste that wool breeds have because they lack the lanolin that woolly breeds have that tends to taint the meat with a heavy smell and taste.  Hair sheep taste like really tender...super tender..venison but sweeter.  My sheep kept my place looking like an English park...trimmed neatly and all the edges trimmed as well.  My old John Deere only had to be run twice a year when I had sheep. 

And sheep stay INSIDE the fences, off of the buildings, out of the trees and out of trouble...unlike goats. 

Yep, I have though before how dumb it is to buy gas and mow grass when you could put an animal on it and get meat or milk (or eggs) in return. I love the free spirit attitude of goats. lol That is a big part of what I like about them.

Hair sheep will browse a lot, depending on the breed you get. Wool breeds are grazers, hair sheep are both browsers and grazers. Goats...browsers but won't maintain the pasture unless it's a Boer. Now, that's a goat I wouldn't mind having, if I had to have a goat at all.

TW, I planted pinto beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapenos, radishes, lettuce, spinach, cukes, and yellow squash. I am looking for the Spanish sweet onions to plant next.

I feel the need to tell a story wether you like it or not.... I have goats (see sig line), I did everything possible wrong, the grand daughter was here and wifey sez " we want goats"... pygmy goats would be cool so off to craigslist. 4 males $25 each, such a deal. Well I did no research of value (they do eat all the crud n brush weeds etc). Wrong stuff: still got horns, still got cahuh, ... privates lol, no shots, had worms... long story shorter, bought them, grand daughter ran em down, put all 4 in a box in the back seat of the hyundai, A LA Beverly hillbillys. I bought the stuff to "band" them got shots and worm med at TSC watched a video to become expert at wethering withering whethering however you say it, still haven't had time to do it (need 2 people). Can you picture my old skinny butt chasing down 4 mini goats that can jump like a rabbit, run like the wind and turn on a dime? Where is the kid when I need her... Back in Vt. with dad at school and probably laughing. On a smelly note my meatys are growing and eating and poopin. It's every day (sometimes) cleaning out their pen, man it smells. Noah, Cedar, Chai, and Faun, will never see a fry pan (the goats), but it will give me some measure of well not pleasure to wether them ( boys this ( I hope) will hurt you more than me)! the meatys will feed us well this winter. Am I bad?

Good to know....  My nearest neighbor is 20 acres away.... and I will have to do this inside the house year round.  Too hot in the summer..... 95 - 105 in the shade  and a comfortable 85 in the house.....   Its doable...  Though in the winter I might have to put a submersible aquarium heater in the water to keep it up to temp.  Easy to do in the lower bucket....

It will ferment well clear down to 50*, just have to mix larger batches then so that it has more time to ferment the grains. I just moved to a larger batch mix as we have been having temps into the 40s at night and mine is in the coop.  Someone suggested a heated water bucket the other day so one could keep it outside and I think that is an excellent idea...and will be following through on that suggestion.  No more toting feed from the house in the winter months. 

No such thing as toooo hot for FF. I've had mine in my non-insulated shop for over year now. Includes temps from nightly low of 10F up to a high of 115F. In the winter, I'll ferment in 2 buckets so that they get about 48hrs of fermenting. I had ice on the rim of the buckets one morning and the days may or may not have gotten above freezing, can't remember, but after 48 hrs, I gaurantee it was fermented. In the summer, I only use 1 bucket that I add food and water to daily, and 16-24 hrs is all it needs. It smells stronger in the summer....Not bad, just stronger.

No need to keep anything in the house unless it gets too cold.

Good morning Lisa. In true redneck style I have some big flower pots and one big flowerbed that I plan to plant in greens. Somewhere in there I plan on throwing some carrots and radishes. I need to find some onions. No shame in my game! lol You have the things you mentioned planted for winter?
