Yep, I sure wish everyone here could be with me on a morning processing. It's like vespers...just business, calm deliberation and keeping things rolling. After you've done it so many times, you really love making the routine more streamlined, more peaceful and injecting as much serenity into it as possible. A dirty job is something best done with a steady mind and a peaceful demeanor...the animals seem to respond to it and I feel pretty good about it all too. We go into death together, much like we've lived with one another...just old friends taking care of the business of the day.
ok I was digging on the inertnet just now looking for Blood sausage recipes...... up pops an article written right here on BYC.... I have to do more research on the mechanics of making blood sausage but this recipe sounds lovely....

So beautifully and eloquently said!
Good Morning Fermenters!!I agree, Bee you have a way with words. I watched a couple videos last year before I dispatched my CX's, they ran the gamut (IMO) of what NOT to do. I relied on memory (which is vague) and instinct, which I found to be reliable. I'll "tweak" it a tiny bit this year but essentially do the same things. One woman in a vid would take the bird by the legs as if she had a baseball bat and slam it against the picnic table to " stun" it or knock it out, a little too violent and overkill if you ask me. Once I set my mind and did my reverence, I did grab them by the legs and they did calm down, no drama no coo-ing etc, just stun them stick em in the cone and dispatch as quickly as possible. I do not believe in being brutal or killing for the sake of it (a la trophy hunters) just quickly and quietly go about the business of procuring food nothing more. I am very much an animal lover, but not one extreme or the other, when it's the time to dispatch a favorite critter to remove it's suffering I'll have that Pang and hesitate for just a second to make peace then send it off to a better place. And for the life of me I don't know why when I just re-read that last part it choked me up, maybe the thought of old friends gone, not sure. Man needs go get back to self sustinence, clean the dirt we have soiled to the point it will no longer grow food without dumping copious amounts of chemicals on it to force growth, take game and animals by taking not the largest best looking, but by culling the herd leaving the best to pass on their genes. I,m putting away my box now sorry...

Good Morning Fermenters!!
Walt don't put your box away. I like hearing you talk. I think we all choke up when it comes to putting our animals down, especially the favorite ones. You know Bee will get all choked up when she puts that Silkie down.

I started my first bucket of FF for my first ever batch of chicks!
I used starter crumble in water with some home-cultured buttermilk. I wanted to get it started way ahead of time (my chicks should show up Wednesday or Thursday) to make sure it was plenty fermented. And to make sure I wouldn't screw it up![]()
Wish me luck! I'm totally new to all of this!
