My girls had the first meal of ff last night. They chowed down!
Awesome!
I started my 24 chicks on ff. We've had no issues so far, and any pasty butt resolved itself within 48 hours, so I know it's doing some good things for their little systems!

Isn't pasty butt a huge pain in the butt!?! lol I've had a little bit of it in shipped chicks but your right, ff does help. Some say that pasty butt is caused by not enough water. The moisture in the ff helps that I'm sure and all the other benefits just get them off to a great start.
Good luck to you on your chicks (and you too SixFizzle)!![]()
Yes, it is.....but I've yet to see a broody raised chick with it!!
So, I started my venture in to cheesemaking yesterday and was looking at things to do with the excess whey once I've processed it all out for mozzarella. Turns out that it's highly recommended for lacto-fermentation, which is what we're doing with our feed! Has anybody added their whey to their feed? I have about three quarts worth, but it was processed a second time for ricotta cheese and that kills the enzymes. Next time, I think I'll do separate batches and add it to my buckets!
So true! I bet the old timers have never heard of pasty butt. I've got some eggs under a pullet ready to hatch this week. I am excited!I hope to never take their job away from them again! lol![]()
I just love watching a mama and her babies browse about, watching her teach them to forage. Those lessons make them better free rangers, I think.
Yep, we sure can't do as good of a job as mama does.
