Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

It most certainly is.....and it seems to be more pronounced as you cook the egg.

I think it's fertilized too but I'm not so sure how at this point as I was 99.9% sure that I did not have a single roo in this bunch of chickens that are now almost 20 weeks old. I haven't ever heard a crow nor seen any bird mounting another one. I guess I'm going to have to keep an eye on things but this "fertilization" spot appears that maybe I do have one boy amongst the gang....

Could you see it before you started cooking it? It might be something different, but sure looks like one.

I was just reading about it and apparently and unfertilized egg can have a pinpoint dot on the yolk....I don't know if it can enlarge and be more evident as the egg cooks or not

Fertilization spots are evident in a raw egg.

All eggs should have a spot, it's just more obvious and shaped like a bulls-eye on a fertile one. What breed(s) do you have? Any pictures?

Yes, it was there before I started cooking it. As soon as I cracked the shell I noticed it.

20wks is about 6 mos, so it *seems* like you'd be able to pick out a boy if he were there. These are your *only* birds? No chance of a neighbor bantam or leghorn (good flyers) having his way with the ladies? Would be great to get close ups of the combs/wattles when they are tucked in for the night. Makes them grumpy, but...

That's why I was thinking I am 99.9% sure there are no boys, because they are almost 6 months old . No neighbours close by with any chickens and I have never seen any other poultry in our yard or even close by. If I can tonight, I'll get some closeup pics if them roosting and post them so you can weigh in . Thanks for your input !

Okay da da da dit dit.... update. Just weighed a few meatys (good thing they can't run very well I had to chase em down). I had 2 @ 7.8 lbs and 1 @ 7, a little disappointed as I thought they would be a little heavier. turning 8 weeks on monday. I know now why y'all like FF so much they were outside free and I brought them in to feed them, they ate and fell asleep maybe too much booze? I think late next week I'll start processing a few of the biggest each day. Had our first frost last night supposed to be tad warmer tonight. I also did most of the winter stuff on the bees, put on mouse guards and have been feeding heavy syrup for a little while (put 5 gals on yesterday). Got stung once first time I've been stung all year and I don't think she ment to as the stinger didn't go all the way in just itches like crazy. They are minimally more agressive than this summer. That's normal though.

Bee, got some question on fermenting and not understanding why it's not working for this lady. See what I copied and pasted below.



Mine is a mix of grains (oats, split peas, alfalfa, ect). I moved it outside because I thought the A/C was messing it up. I put an old shirt over the top so it could get air. It starts to bubble, I stir it and it's like it stops right there, no more bubbles the water gets cloudy it just fizzles out for some reason. I've read all the articles you've posted, read all your posts, just can't figure it out. I'm at a loss.

The water will get cloudy though when it ferments and once you stir it if it has water over it, you wont be able to see if bubbling until it soaks up some of that water. I'm thinking that it is fine and you just add new feed to it in 3-4 days to keep it feeding on something. Like sour dough bread, it has to be fed or it will die sooner or later.

then her reply.... I just went back and read the ingredients. It already has a lot of "dried fermented" this and that it that statement even makes sense??? Would that effect it?



Have you ever heard of dried fermented feed? Is THAT WHY it's not wanting to do right Bee?
