Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I have 25 CX due next Friday. Yay! I always get excited for chicks lol

I have in FF mix with 5 grain scratch, 16% layer that the love and is an easy 50/50 mix for me to handle.

I have grit available, will be free ranging at 2 weeks.

Do I have to start the CX on chick starter ?
(fermented maybe a smaller bag would last rather than 50lb-er?)
Or
Can they handle the current grain/layer mix if I add an outside source of protein at feed time?

My layers are not free ranging with this batch.

Thanks for any input, this thread has been invaluable!

The first week or so it may be a good thing to use the finer ground chick starter before graduating them to the whole grain mix. Long about the time you free range, you can try them on the grown up mix and see how they handle it.

Saw that and can't believe that many people would choose to steal when given the opportunity. Astounding...and not in a good way.

Well...my older brother has been exploring caponizing and wanted to see what would happen if we caponized BUD. I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt to try it, though I don't have the proper equipment...but when has that ever stopped me before? Improvising and adapting is a nurse's most valuable set of tools, so I just may see what I can do to the old Budster's testiculars...can't hurt him and can only help, I'm thinking. And who better to try it on than the "un-chicken"...he's been dead once before and he ain't scared of it.

Poor Bud! Just remember his glowing eyes. Having said that, you are a nurse and I know you will do a GREAT job!
Take pictures so we can learn along with you!

The scary thing about that wm thing is that those kind of people are EVERYWHERE amongst us! We probably look several of them in the eye regularly!

You earned a hug from the fiancee and I for that one we love your sense of humor and good attitude keep it up and don't forget pictures of the unchicken operation.

Oh and as far as the Walmart issue Walmart is just as much to blame as the people cheating the system because they know people shouldn't have that kind of money on an EBT card. They should have shut down the registers when they realized there was a problem which makes them accomplices to fraud. Not that the people taking advantage of it are less to blame.
