Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

That sounds pretty good for a coop. I've heard of many others that were much more expensive for less space. Zip ties definitely have a lot of uses. Two things though; how much of a snow load can it support? and does that plastic sheeting deteriorate at all due to the weather?

The plastic sheeting is only for winter wear..and it lasts all winter long and beyond. Some is being used for the second winter. Snow load, I'm not sure...we don't get more than 3-5 ft of snow here and that is now pretty rare. Used to be we'd get that every winter and some areas of the state still get that and more each winter. The arched design would tend to withstand a heavy burden more than a flatter roof, with most of the snow falling off the sides and only a minimal cap remaining on top, which could be easily knocked off, I'm thinking. The cattle panels have good tensile strength and would no doubt hold more than PVC arches would.

For an 8x10 coop, the cost is so minimal compared to other forms of construction and the prices of traditional coops. It also has the advantage of being easily disassembled or easily moved as is to a new location, it has the open air design that is desirable for our warming climates and it has expansion capabilities.

A tribute to a great man in the poultry world...Robert Blosl. Rob has left this Earth, but his teaching and immense knowledge of heritage poultry and breeding expertise will live on in those who have learned from him. A wonderful, wise and kind man who helped many and gave of his time freely. He will be greatly missed and the loss to the world of poultry is huge...just HUGE. You will be greatly missed, Mr. Blosl. I ask the Lord to keep your family in this time of grief and comfort them, bind up their hearts and send them my love and respect for the husband, father, brother, teacher and friend they have lost.

Late yesterday evening...very suddenly. I knew he was having problems with some high blood pressure and was cutting back on his birds, but I don't think anyone expected this. I keep welling up when I think about him being gone from here. A good man.

Yes he was. He was SO KIND to me on the Heritage RIR thread when I posted pics of my RIR. He told me to enjoy my birds. He didn't down grade them since they said they wasn't heritage. I thought that was so kind of him. I read an article he wrote the other day in a magazine in town about heritage chickens. I noticed who wrote it and I had to read it. I am almost positive it was him that wrote it. My memory these days makes me not sure of myself.

I didn't know Mr Blosi but I have seen his name mentioned and always with deep respect. I can see from the posts about him that he must have been a really nice man. I am really sorry for his family and friends.

Bee, I love how you use an insulating wall of leaves on the outside of your coop...brilliant!!

I bet the chickens love when you take the "walls" off of it in the spring too! I bag leaves and store them in the barn to put on the floor of the coop throughout the winter here....great bedding and it gives the flock something to dig in when snow-cover prevents them from getting to the ground outside.

Ditto on the loss of Bob.....we could use many more like him.

So sorry for the loss you are all feeling. I don't think I knew of him. Prayed for his family.
