Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

It didn't last very long and it didn't stick but it's just the first. I have a feeling we are going to get many heavy, wet snows this winter and around here that means weeks of lost power....the power goes out here if someone sneezes too hard on a sunny, summer day.

But...we are prepared, with feed, food, wood and water stocked up, as per usual for us folks living in the boonies, so it's not something we stress over. Warm fire, free ranged and home raised chicken soup or venison stew, homemade bread, a good book and we are golden!

I'm praying for some wet heavy snows this winter! And no, I'm not crazy!! I would loved to get snowed in for a few days. We had an ice storm 5-6 years ago at Christmas. It lasted 5 days for us. We heat with wood, had a generator, gas grill, and we have well water. My two daughters and their familes came to stay with us. We cooked Christmas dinner on the grill and used the generator to run my electric roaster. It was the best time EVER!! Loved every minute of it. Many of our friends had no electric or water for a lot longer than we, and some even went to hotels. They had the roads cleared after a day or two, but it took them alot of time to get power back up. I would love to have another few days like that. I know a lot of people had a very hard time, so I don't want bad things to happen to others, but for us, we make do. And even better, we also have free ranged chickens in the freezer, and eggs, and maybe venison, if DS gets a good shot off!!

Isn't it funny? What some see as a horrible thing, others seem to see as a~albeit forced~ slowing down time, being together, enjoying simple things like conversation, board games, a good book or just silence. What people used to do each winter anyway, before the age of technological advancement. Me and my kids used to love getting snowed in..it always felt like a special time of being cut off from the world and it always felt more cozy and more intimate, a bonding time.

I wouldn't wish hard times on anyone and I know many are not in a position to enjoy loss of power or being cut off from the world or medical care, but at our home it's always a little bit of a blessing as we see how inventive we can be about doing without certain things. I was raised on a homestead for a good part of my growing up and it was without electricity or running water, no phone, no TV, big family in a two room log cabin, so I am comfortable doing without convenience items like running water, hot showers, utilities, etc. It's actually harder to go without power in the summer months than it is in the winter time.

Do you get a lot of snow where you live?

I share your sentiments Bee, about bonding at such times. Not so bad if you're prepared. :) I do understand though about copious amounts of snow & working in the cold. Ugh! Its a good reason to cull down my flock to a minimum around this time of year. Keeping it simple helps. :)

I know, living here in the mountains, I'm supposed to hate snow but I've always loved it..even when I have to get out and work in it, hands frozen and wet, feet without feeling any longer, face the same, I still love the way the air taste after a snow and I love seeing the stark trees against the white of the snow. I love seeing the houses lit up from within at twilight, with the lights from the windows falling out onto the snow and smoke drifting from chimneys.

I don't even mind driving in the snow, as I've always been pretty good at it and see it as a challenge of my driving skills. I'd probably feel differently about that if I lived in the burbs or the city, because the bane of winter driving is always the idiotic actions of those who can't drive in the snow and keep slamming on their brakes every two seconds. Can't stand that..those who cannot drive in the snow, should not attempt it.

If they live in an area that gets snow and they cannot drive in the snow, they need to work on that skill until they CAN drive in the snow...or move to where they don't have snow. Just my personal thoughts on it....

I have always hated it, even as a child, I would cry if my parents tried to get me out in it to "play". If I could afford it and convince my husband I would live where it never got below 50' (f)

Awwww...that's sad.

I can just see you as a little girl, not wanting to go out and play in it. Do you get chilled easily? I can see where that would be very uncomfortable. I get overheated easily, so I'm just the opposite..I don't like to be where it's hot and humid. That just makes my spirit and everything else just MELT. I guess I was just born for the mountains, though I really loved when I went on a Caribbean Cruise...they seemed to have a constant breeze there that moved the humidity out.
