Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I take it some time in the past "bee" made panties for her silkie hen? Just think of all the fun Ive missed!! I spend way too much time on here as it is - - - deliberately avoiding chat rooms and such as that but "chickens"? That's another story entirely!! Love those peeps! beverly
Bee is short for Beekissed, she is pretty hard core, minimalist, natural, let chickens be chickens, no frills lady. Any reference to her putting diapers, bras, saddles etc..... on her chickens was in fun since she is about as likely to do that as the sun is to rise in the west.

Thanks Kassaundra, yeah I knew what I t meant, but I wasn't sure if she was the one living in the boonies who grew up very primitively. No wonder she's got all the smarts for living right. And those snowed-in nights do sound good to me too. It makes for tighter knit families and much better kids. : ) bev

I haven't tried very many but I like yogurt, kraut, kefir and pickles. I tried kambucha tea one time but didn't like it too well. If I can find two brain cells to rub together( lol) I am going to check into fermented foods again. I know they are good for us, just look at our chickens. Isn't the woman who does a lot of work in fermented foods named Sally Fallon? Seems like she is the one with cookbooks out. I think her info can be found on Dr. Weston Price's website.

I didn't see Fallon's name on the Price site, but then I only read a little. I downloaded the whole book so I could read it later. But a friend of mine said to google Fallon. Haven't done it yet. I'm busy at present putting sides on some enormous cable spools, (you know the ones we hippies used to use for dining room tables?) to make for secure cubbies the chickens can run into this winter when all the trees are bare and the hawks are prevalent in my neighborhood. My big pit takes good care of my chickens except when its cold. He doesn't have much hair so wants inside all the time, (must make him a sweater). He chases off squirrels, grackles, doves and even saved my favorite chicken from a hawk that had her. Later. : ) beverly

And so what fermented foods do you find palatable? I actually only know of yogurt and sour kraut. What else can we eat? I'm going to start making Kombucha tea; got some of the mother. : ) beverly
Milk kefir, you can ferment carrots. garlic, pickles, and all sorts of stuff. I have done these but we didn't like the pickles, maybe it was just something I did wrong. You can take the milk kefir and let it sit like you're suppose to and then drain out the grains (you have to purchase these, got mine from Amazon) and then you can use the kefir to make sour cream, yogurt, and other stuff with it. We make smoothies and I have made ice cream with it as well. LOADS of recipes on the internet as well as videos to watch. Don't just watch one though because ANYBODY can make a video and post it on here and some folks don't do it right.

Yes TW I actually have Sally's book but not wild about it since I don't do wheat and not much grains either. There is a guy and I cannot think of his name to save my neck right now but they call him the king I think it is of milk kefir and fermented foods and I really like his info. Sandor Katz is his name. I just googled it. lol He's got tons of info on his blog! TONS I WISH I had HIS book!!!

We have a bunch of big old oaks but they all do really well except one. Every year it looks like it gets some kind of fungus on the leaves but it doesn't kill it. We did have two big spruce trees that had those dang bag worms on them. I finally had them cut down this year. I am thinking about replacing them with some kind of fruit or nut trees. I WISH I had planted a fruit/nut orchard years ago, along with some fruit bushes.
oh me and you both on wishing on planting those fruit trees and such. We'd have loads of fruit by now. oh well

So attached that I marinated him gently in BBQ sauce and massaged spices gently into his muscles, then gave him a delightful slow sauna at a little salon we like to call "The Grill". Man, I miss that bird!

Why, oh, why did he have to taste so good?

Y'all get funnier and funnier every time I step away from this site.....

Been splitting wood most of the day and the Ol' Bat has been making deer jerky...the house smells YUM. Currently nursing slightly smashed but perfectly functional fingers and eating cold, crisp apples right from the tree....drool fest.
