Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

A little snow this morning. Chickens were not amused and neither was I.

ugh mine would freak out for sure! I put a cloth over their door since it's metal and has holes all in it because it's suppose to be like 20 tonight. Well that freaked them out when they were to go in their roosting area so they didn't want to go in there then. Was only trying to keep them warmer. lol anyway hubby had been putting in some deep litter and was busy so I walked out there and just threw it over the door so when he closed it he could put it in place. They DID NOT like that! So he/we had a time getting them all to go in the pen tonight. ugh and I DID NOT need to be out there in that wind because I am still sick with this mess. But hoping it will be ok and I'll be fine. They should be warmer tonight anyway!

I am a confirmed, life long, committed hater of all things winter. But I am an avid lover of photography, so sometimes my love of photography overwhelms my good sense to avoid all things winter and I can't help myself I take a few pics. We don't get the ugly weather here until later in the season but here are a few pics from previous years.

Wow, those are some amazing photos. I'm so jealous!

Being a hermit is so very peaceful.  :)   We don't have cell or TV, only this PC through the land line phone and I only use it for this forum, to listen to sermons or the occasional search.  I could do without it also and have done for most of my life until my mid-30s.  It's quite a blessing to be alone with God and one's own thoughts for most of the time...the chaos of the world just lives outside that warm bubble.

I imagine most people would think that I live like at least a semi-hermit. And yep, I like it too. I do all my "computering" on my cell phone. Phone and computer all in one package and that anywhere anytime thing, perdy nice. Sometimes when I get bored I just think, "Hmmm what do I want to know...?" then I start Googling. I can just get carried away with all the information that's out there on pretty much anything. Then sometimes if I am feeling a little down and need a laugh I go to YouTube and search for something funny and always end up laughing. lol Oh... and talking to people all over the world - that is so cool!

very pretty pix and yep me to on the hater of snow and really cold weather. :barnie

Yep I'm with you on the cold weather. One of the best things about it to me is that I am not sweating buckets because of the heat and humidity. I want to live in that place with near perfect weather year around. I don't ask for much. lol

Would fermented grass seed be of any benefit to the birds in the winter?
I think I'm going to have the feed mill mix chicken feed for me as they use different whole grains plus add the needed vitamins/minerals. That would save having to buy separate bags and wondering if I'm giving too much or not enough or something.
I've got about 150 adults and have been rotating 4 5g buckets feeding about 8 g a day and this is working extremely well. I think I'm having a bit too much fun with it

is a slight sour smell a good thing with FF or is it bad? my smaller batch i got going for my quail has recently developed a slight sour smell and since these are my first batches of FF i do not know if that a good thing or if it bad and i need to toss it.

In another thread, Beekissed mentioned fermenting whole grains and feeding it to broilers as an alternate way to get them to slaughter size. It would be nice if Beekissed would expound on that here. Following is part of a post that he put in that other thread:

I'm very interested in this (and so is my wife) because we have discovered fermenting foods, and the nutritional value they have. Now I hear that it can be done with chickens and I'm a little excited.

ACV - Apple Cider Vinegar?

It sounds like you are doing good. It usually has a sour smell or sometimes smells like sourdough bread. I've even heard some describe it as smelling like vomit. lol Right now mine smells really good, like sweet apples. What all do you have in the batch for your quail? If your feed has any meat in it they say it can smell bad. I'm not sure but I believe most game bird feeds do have meat in them.
