Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Houston we have a problem!!! Been seeing spiders in the house (and the same kind outside), big juicy ones! I don't do spiders ...rather have a house chicken! LOL Hmmm.... if I had a house chicken I might not have spiders. Nope, no way. LOL Time to bring out the poison!

Fed my pullets some jalapenos this morning to see if they will do what cayennes are said to do for egg production. Broody laid an egg this morning. Thank you Ms Broody Pou'let. One of the youngsters ate a dang egg! It was probably already broken because they haven't figured out the nest thing yet. Thinking about roll out nests to prevent some of those hussies from ending up in the oven!

HEY!!! Leave Houston out of it (my area)!! I didn't send them to you.

I take after my granddad. He always told me to leave the spiders alone. They take care of the bugs we don't like. He said if they are up high, leave them alone. If they come down to your level, kill or put outside. I guess that is part of the reason my nickname is 'Bug'--I like them.

Well....looks like I'm going to pick up those free meats this weekend!  :weee   Ten to twelve LF roosters of an age to have their full store of meat on the bone.  Will sweeten them up for a few weeks and put them in a jar.  YAY!  More healthy meat, more golden stock.  Don't know why I haven't been doing this all along....sometimes my mind gets stuck in the mud~ the wheels spin and nothing happens, ya know?

Will also be picking up two new layer birds, BAs, from another place...pullets at POL.  That means two of my oldsters can be canned up when the cheap meats buy the farm in a couple of weeks.

See? Chicken math applies at my coop too....but I haven't forgotten how to subtract. Seems some folks have forgotten that part of arithmetic.  :D

I know what you mean. I have several "duh!" moments. Then it kinda ticks me off when I didn't think of something simple or logical before. And it really ticks me off when somebody has to think of it for me!

Speaking on behalf of your older ladies... Ohhhh come on, they are still doing a good job. No need to can them. (pun intended hahaha) Addition is much more fun than subtraction! Pleeeze let them live!

Congrats on the roos.

Now, TW....you know all those birds are egg eaters...can't kill 'em all. Just wait for the shells to firm up and the problem will disappear.

Me too, Lisa! Can't say I like 'em but I usually leave them alone unless they are crawling around my bedroom. You have no idea how many times I've almost drank a spider in my water at bedside!

Congrats on the roos.

Some of them gals haven't laid in months~Fanny being one of them~and Little Red is on a molting break...she gets to live because she is an egg machine even as an old lady. Middle Sister is laying an egg a day now...but she hadn't laid since she went broody back in July! Too old to lay consistently and though they have sentimental value, one cannot eat sentiment and one cannot save money while feeding it.

I've already culled Raggedy Ann, Katy and Barbara Ann in the last cull along with BUD. After the next one, the only ones left from the Gnarly Bunch will be Little Red and Toby. Honorary members of the flock for a little while yet...Little Red because she earned it and Toby because I don't expect him to lay an egg...just protect the gals and look pretty.
Ohhh you think you're punny! HA! They are actually that big, really. LOL

Methinks she exaggerateth a little....or, maybe that's why she though they were from Houston...everything's bigger in TX.

I have a 30ish gallon bucket of fermented grain, it is black and stays outside all year round. In the winter I put it in full sun and afternoon shade in summer. The edges freeze and thaw through the day and night, but it has never ruined the ferment (same juice for over 2 years). I live in eastern central Oklahoma.

So maybe it would work for me to have it in the lean-to, without any heat tape. I could push it out the door during the day when it is sunny (although it may warm up enough inside the lean-to when it's sunny to make this unnecessary.) and put it back in at night. I'm guessing your area probably doesn't get as cold as mine, but with judicious use of the lean-to I may be able to achieve similar results.

These heat tapes use so little electricity, I believe it to be negligible.

Good to know, if I need to use any!

@Hennyette... just be sure you DO NOT seal up your fermenting feed in any container because it will probably blow up on you. Now I love that sort of thing (hehe) but it could be dangerous and a huge mess in your house and a waste of feed. LOL I may be wrong but to me my feed doesn't stink at all. Really I think it smells good - like real sweet apples for some unknown reason...?

@everybody... I was just thinking, what about a cooler with a small light bulb hanging just inside of it? Might want to duct tape it so it couldn't fall in.

Not to mention the divorce my husband would probably demand!

I will definitely remember that, even with doing it out in the lean-to, as I don't want any explosions, anywhere!

If I had that smack button I would smack you... making fun of a wuss for being scared of spiders! Hm! Shame shaaaame!
You mean this one????

I can still hear my sister yelling, 'LISA, THERE IS A SPIDER IN THE BATHROOM'. 7 kids in the family, and I get called!! My daughter calls me from Indiana and tells me there is a spider. Now what am I suppose to do????
