Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I still get close and I guess you could call them a type of pet for me....that closeness is why I take my responsibility for culling so to heart. I really and truly care about each bird out there, I smile and my heart warms when I see them, they have names and distinct personalities~I talk to them and treat them gently when I handle them. I never advise anyone to "not get too close" or "never name the meat chickens"...that's silly! Those animals deserve your attention, affection and love the same as all the others...maybe even more so, because they will nourish your body one day, which is an even closer bond between species.

I guess I just see these things a lot different than most folks....we bond very closely with the food animals here and always have. It makes it a little more difficult to cull for processing but why should that be an easy thing? Killing something should never be an easy thing. Doesn't have to be over dramatic, but it most decidedly shouldn't be "easy". Makes one appreciate the animal all the more if it hurts the heart to kill it and eat it. I never want to grow so detached that I don't get a little sad when I kill an animal.
Right, right, right. "Isaac" is in the fridge now. I named him because he was the coolest rooster I have ever had. He didn't fit the breeding program. Even those that fit the program will be harvested eventually. When I set him aside for a day of starvation before killing I was reminded of Abraham and Isaac. I had raised and hand-fed this friend since he was a chick. I felt the pain of the irony, and I knew that there would be no burning bush to save his life. I will eat him, and I will respect the nourishment that he provides. I will also remind myself that he lived because we eat chickens. If we didn't do that, there would be billions fewer chickens on this earth. Each of our species promotes the life of the other. We should not only appreciate them, we should love and respect them.

LOL

puritan had a buy 1 get 2 free and I got 3 bottles of 60 caps for 21 with shipping I believe it was. Maybe there was some change to.

Good Morning Rose! I am so glad you are feeling better. You just might be able to taste Thanksgiving dinner!!

Did you buy the 600 mg of the N-ACETYL CYSTEINE or the 1000 mg? Is this something you take from here on out or just when you are sick.

Thanks!

Lisa :)

Good morning all. :) Has anybody got any extra diapers? I need to bring my babies in. LOL It is supposed to get down in the teens here tonight and be COLD for about the next week! Oh boy! Brrr!

@Rose... Glad you're feeling better!

@You Hillbilly/Country People... You've all been talking my language! Ahh...makes me feel at home. hehe Here's one for you, "make Baptist pallets".

To use that in a sentence... "We could all go to Bee's house and make Baptist pallets!" lol

OH YES it would be nice! I FINALLY got the most eggs today that I haven't gotten yet and I have 15 hens. We got 9 eggs today. :celebrate  Although 2 of those were teeny tiny ones so they'd really count as 1.  So I think 3 of those Aussies have FINALLY started laying. The RIR's hens are laying some nice sized eggs now.

Fed mine jalapenos yesterday, gonna see if it makes them eggs fire out the other end like a cannon ball! hahaha

Good evening

Those things are pretty and would be even prettier if they weren't so creepy. HA! We call then "banana spiders" around here, well when I was a kid anyhow.

Oh! I love those spiders. I made 'pets' of them as a kid -- used to throw grasshoppers into their webs, and they'd get so used to it they'd scuttle to the center when my shadow passed over their webs!
That's cool. We get those spiders up here in Canada too. I admire their beauty in the outdoors.

Loving the hillbilly terms. I think there might be a little hillbilly in me somewhere. ;)

Ugh!  Spiders!  I'm with you TW!
Amen sista! lol

You'd probably laugh at me!  Most of the birds I cull, make me a bit sad, like you mentioned but there are some that I've culled and cried like a baby!  Still crying an hour later and if I think about it, could cry some more even months later!

Wish I wasn't so soft hearted/headed, but I really really love my birds!

I know, I need to get out more and make some friends.  Well, my answer is this... if I could love animals this easily and get along with them too, what makes you think I'm any good at human relations?

Ditto! I know if I got too close to my chickens I would be the same way. One of these days I will drop my guard and make a pet out of one of them. Then it will be like Hellbender talked about his, they will live until they die of old age or get really sick and I had to ...have somebody else put them down. lol

Hi Shellz. Didn't know you were in Canada. :) Most "other" people here think we are stupid and uneducated for the way we talk. We are referred to as ignorant hillbillies, country bumpkins, hicks, inbred, etc, etc. When "one of us" do "get educated" they usually try to quit using the language so they won't look dumb like us. I do believe they care a tad bit too much about what other folks think about them. I never understood the fact that Ebonics is totally acceptable but a little country talk seemed to hairlip my professors. "Ohhhhhhh!!! YOU said ain't! Heaven forbid!" LOL I actually did learn in college that "ain't" is actually the contraction for "am not"- but they still don't want you to use that word because it doesn't sound proper. And sometimes "ain't" is used correctly and sometimes it ain't. hehe Whatever... what does that have to do with chickens? I don't know but I'll let you know. LOL
