Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I just raked up a ton of leaves and stuffed the coop lol this is temporary.







Their coop has a riversilt base with sand (3 inches or so) on top. Easy as pie to rake into a pile and wheel to the cold compost pile

Only temporary? Don't want to start a good, cultured deep litter there that can provide extra nutrition, activity and the growth of good bacteria in the coop and also keep the birds warm in the winter and decrease flies in the summer? I'd "leaf" it there....get it? I crack myself up....

LOL. You're right it's temporary. Give those little terrorists a few days and you'll have about 4 inches of deep litter...

My chooks LOVE when I put fresh dried leaves in the coop. They cluck and chip and scratch like they've died and gone to Heaven.

I put in shredded pine, they're all 'meh'.

I put in chopped straw and they shriek like they've seen Ceasar's ghost!

Ooooohhh, very pretty place!!! Aren't all our animals lucky to have such nice places to be? Nothing can beat the freedom to roam, eat what they want, socialize out in the wide open spaces.

Thanks Bee! You betcha! That dog of mine has 'escorted' coyotes and larger dogs off our property for most years we've been here. Have a smaller 20 lb mutt too that I've seen chase a fox off. My dynamic duo.

You mean you don't have an official, blue blooded, heritage line LGD and you still get protection from predators????

Many on these forums would call you a liar on that one, I tell ya! When you insist it is actually true, then they reply that there is no way you could have coyotes because they could kill bigger dogs than yours with much ease and, furthermore, your dog won't "bond" with the flock and so cannot truly, in reality, in all good concise definition, be called a LGD...even though it does indeed guard the livestock successfully. C'mon..get with the program!

I remind them over and over how farm mutts have been doing "livestock guardian" work since time began but they still insist they are not uniquely bred over hundreds of years for the job and therefore cannot truly be considered guarding the livestock. Doesn't matter...it's like talking to a wall. Kudos to you and your farm mutt and all the other dogs like him and my Jake who are out there putting in the hours and the effort and getting no credit at all on the pages of livestock forums.

I second Bee's assertion. Some of the LGD's do a great job but a truly tough little farm dog (or two in my case) will guard farm animal very well.

Gotta love those leaves... my dear girls like to kick each others eggs out of the nest. I walked in there a day or two ago and I feel a "crunch!" from under the leaves. Ahhh!!! And they all came running like they already knew something about egg eating...hmmm?!?

Temporary for the CX. Lol I give them 12 hours before its full lol of some hot compost! Actually I have MANY compsters and piles going...filling gardens now toilet it break down more and all this new waste goes back into another pile
I use and sell it all. It's amazing stuff.
