Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I think it is all about goals and scale (both w/ chickens and rabbits or any other animal raised for meat or a purpose) in the natural feed vs commercial feed camps. If your keeping small scale raising enough to feed your family it is much easier to do this on a natural diet / non traditional housing. However if your trying to do larger numbers, having meat / eggs / whatever to sell and make money, and it makes a large diff bottom line if the animal is ready for market this week or three weeks from now, then the traditional housed bagged food faster growers etc... make much more sense. Neither one is wrong, just different goals = different tools.

We moved the rabbits out of the coop for room. Thought it'd be great all in one place but we needed the extra room in the coop later. I still think hanging them in a large coop is an awesome idea. We moved them to an indoor area in the workshop and made all our cages except the pet grey lop and bought trays we aligned under their cages. (cement mixing trays that were on sale for $2 made of uber thick washable plastic) the trays lips overlap each other so waste fall in from anywhere keeping it in the bins. I pull out a tray and dump it right into the garden and rinsed or sifted of hay & into a composted pile of rabbit poo people pay me to scoop up lol.
The grey lop has a store bought cage with guards and a tray that cost $14.99- pee effin everywhere. I swear he flings poo too.

Nice setup and neat workshop. I'd hate for you to see my garage right now! lol

While our beloved NN may be from Alpha Centauri at least they don't come from an unnatural union between a chicken and a stuffed animal brought to life!!!!! lol lol lol

Shooting them would work but if I were going to dispatch a rabbit that way, a .22 short might even be over-kill.  A high quality air pistol would do the job if one must resort to gun violence.. LOLOLOLOL

I bought me a new pellet/BB rifle not long ago. It's fancy, has a scope and all -well probably a $3 scope. LOL I got a fellow gun freak friend to zero that scope in so these squirrels and rabbits around here just don't know what they've got coming! lol But I need a pellet/BB pistol to carry around because the rifle is a little cumbersome and I don't want to knock my scope out of whack. Yes, I do love a little well directed gun violence. I am a hick, don't you know? hahahaha

Hi Lacy. That is a good idea but right here in my area the wise old folks are about all gone. But now that you mention it I bet I know a man that would probably know if anybody does. I'll have to take him a cutting and see what he says. Thanks.

LOL...What you have should do the job...just put the barrel flush to the top of the rabbit's head. It might kick and squirm just a bit but it will be dead. Good luck and happy eating!!! I love rabbit stew.

Call your county extension agent or take a sample of the branches and berries into their office and they may be able to identify it for you.  That's the safe and rational way to do that.  Me...I'd just eat a few of them and see what happens.     If the birds aren't eating them, it's a good chance it's because they aren't edible but it's always worth a shot just to see. 

Well I hope we have a better extension agent than we had in the past. I had to go to his office once and said NEVER AGAIN! lol There is a nursery/greenhouse in a nearby town. The owner's daughter seems to be pretty up on horticulture. She might know but then again, she might not know about "wild" plants. That bush just came up there along with a wild rosebush on a fence post. I think fence posts have wild rosebush seeds attached to them! lol I noticed another one of those bushes on the other side of the yard. I was going to try one of those berries when I fed a little while ago but I forgot and walked right by it.
