Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Bee, I can just picture him! Animals, domestic or wild, provide us with so much joy!

I have a one-eyed barn cat, Cy, short for Cyclops (named before I got him). He's a rescue that had an infected eye that was taken out when they neutered him. The vets and techs named him. A friend who traps and transport feral populations to be neutered, called because she knew I was looking for a replacement for my male barn cat that had recently been put down. I said sure he could come stay here and keep my female company. Their only job is to keep the rodent population down around the chicken coop. He became quite tame between the attention at the clinic and rehab here.....so that's the background....now here's the story. I was watching out the window and saw Cy in his "wild cat crouch" and looked to see what he was so intent on. I couldn't see anything on the driveway. We've had a lot of snow and we have a gravel driveway that is cleared using a snow blower. He just crouched there doing the "predator stare" so I waited. Suddenly he jumps up and pounces on a rock! Yes, a rock from the drive was his target! He grabbed it and tossed into the air and pounced again and threw it again! He did this about a dozen times and then saw me at the windowr and sauntered over to the porch to see if I had anything for him. Spring needs to get here soon.....the cabin fever is even getting to the animals!

TW, the common name is plantain but the scientific and "real" name is plantago. I call it by the scientific name to differentiate it from the subspecies of banana. XD It confuses people when you call them plantains and they think of the starchy fruit.

Aha, okay. Most people around here have never heard of plantains. lol We never had them in the grocery stores until the Hispanic population moved to town. They brought a lot of good food with them! :) I will try that on those roos. We have lots of it. There's a big patch out by the road. Not sure what shape it is in now but I'll see.

@Bee... HA! Jake the cookie killer! hehe

Reminds me of when I was about 12ish, me and the dog went hunting... really exploring while packing a gun. LOL We were down in a deep creek bed walking along and the dog went into stalk mode, all crouched down creeping along. About the same time I saw it too, a big rabbit sitting in the middle of the creek bed! We're sneaking and creeping along then the dog stops and turns and looks at me kind of embarassed. We were about to kill a stump! hahaha

Plantagos are probably my favorite plant ever, largely in part of how common they are. :3 I love that I can be on a long walk and be al like "poo! I am getting a blister! Oh look a plantago!" and fix it right there. :p I just put the leaf flat on the blister, letting it wear through the leaf naturally and it feels SO much better. I also got stung by a bumble bee earlier this year, much to my horror. (I am terrified of bees!) The plantago took the swelling and pain down immediately! If nothing else it should bring some comfort to your roos. You may be able to grind it WITH Vaseline and make a sort of sticky paste that will stay on their combs... Like an all natural Neosporin or something.

Cats have to be the number one comical animal on my list..they all freak out come sundown and race around looking like their eyes will bug out of their heads if they don't catch and bite something!

I've had to "train" a couple to not see my moving legs as the target for their games. Funny no matter how old I get!

Now THAT'S funny! I love it when a dog has that embarrassed look on their faces...all mine look like that when you catch them pooping. It's like they are very ashamed that I watch, so I usually turn my back until they are done...just out of courtesy.

I'd want the same courtesy if it were me. When I pee outdoors and Jake doesn't realize what I'm doing and comes running to me, he comes to an abrupt halt and turns around when he sees I'm actually just peeing. Turn about is fair play.

CM... A Mennonite was telling me about somebody he knew who had a horse that had a big nasty sore on it, probably cancer. They had worked on it and worked on it and their vet had done all he knew to do but it just got worse. He finally gave up and decided to just turn the horse out and let it live as long as possible out on the pasture. He said as soon as they turned the horse out it went straight to some plantain and ate it and the horse recovered. Plantain is one of those thing given to us for healing. And you know what duh!!!! Look what I have that I had clean forgot about... got it from the local Amish/Mennonite store! I know what I'll be doctoring the roos with tonight!

My dog does that. He does his pooping way out in the field preferably hid in some tall grass. Sometimes he will walk a little ways then stop and see if I'm looking, walk a little further and check again to see if I'm looking. lol It just bugs him to death if I won't stop looking at him. Funny critters. LOL

Now that is something to store in the ol' brain case. Please report back on this, TW. Sure would be nice to add that to the all natural treatments pantry.

So, back on topic .. ;)
We're considering getting a few cornish cross chicks in the spring, and partner has tasked me with figuring out an estimate of how much they will eat in their brief life. Can anyone point me to the chart I know I remember seeing somewhere?
