Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

That would be interesting to see if it's just this Rex or if each time you cross a Rex with a NZ you get quicker and better growth. That might be an interesting way to go with a breeding program for meat production. I like their calm natures too.

BAs do great in the heat...at least mine always do. WRs do well but you'll see them holding their wings out and panting more than other breeds due to their large bodies and lush feathering. If you are going for heritage stock, you might also consider RIRs....some amazing birds from the breeders on the thread here and their birds are BIG. They do well in the heat, especially if using single comb varieties. Also might not be quite as expensive to get into a the Dorkings.

You'll love the WR...also a very quiet bird. They do great on forage and will finish out with more meat on the spent hens than most breeds have on their roosters.

Here's a full grown RIR rooster, whole, lying next to just half of a old WR hen.....

Hey, Rosemarie...why are your RIRs looking bad right now?

That's the beef world's answer to Cornish Cross chickens!

they shooting out sooooooo many eggs Bee. They haven't stopped since they started laying. I keep thinking they'll stop any minute but they keep popping em out.

I hope they take a little break before spring time so they will start to look better. I'm getting 11-12 eggs a day now from 15 hens. They started laying and they're still going strong. There for a while after they laid awhile I was only getting 5-9 a day and then before the cold spell they started laying more. The RIR's are laying better than the BA's though I think. I have a couple of them, a BA and a RIR that is laying right at dusk. I worry about them being able to find the roost. lol

The best layers usually look a little raggedy, though my WRs never did. Little Red Hen always looks just a little shabbier than the rest because she is such a steady layer....more food goes into eggs then feathers on some breeds.

I'm glad you are getting so many eggs! Are you selling any?

I just can't guess what is WR?

Hey there. I have only put cod liver oil on the frostbite. I fed the frostbit roos and the pen with the sneezing roo some moist feed with a lot of garlic, peppers, tumeric and ginger. I also cut up some peppers and garlic and put it in a quart of acv and will be putting that in Sneezy's water if he doesn't clear up soon. I may give that to the frostbit boys too hoping maybe maaaaybe it will help keep down any infections. I gave all the pens some pumpkin today too, just for some added Vitamin C. Tomorrow night I will probably clean the frostbit wattles good and treat again. Can you tell I don't know what to do so I am just throwing the kitchen sink at them??? LOL

Thanks for the info. I'm still trying to figure out what to do to help my Rodney's comb... I got a good look at it today and it certainly isn't looking any better. I thought when I looked at it a couple days ago that there was some red coming back into it, but it doesn't appear that is the case.

I'm certain he'll lose the top part of his comb but until then I'll keep an eye on it. I'm going to spray some Vertericyn spray on it tomorrow just to see if I can fend off any potential infection. We shall see how it goes. He seems to be feeling great... Eating and trying I service the ladies like a mad man so I don't think it really bothers him too much.

Hey there WBF. I'm just hoping for no infection and I'll be satisfied. Mine will look a little ragged but oh well... I hope your Rodney comes out alright. Looking a little beat up will give him character. :)

I too am hoping for no infection, and all will be well :). I agree, character is what will make him unique and we all know, the ladies love character ! LOL :gig :lau

Hey guys, I know there are a lot of believers on this thread. Would you do me a huge favor and pray for a woman by the name of Teresa. She is in the hospital and really not doing good at all. :(

Thanks
