My Aussie likes to wander about 20+acres. He's pretty good about staying on my place but I'd like to be sure. I hope to come up with a guard dog that will keep stray dogs ran off. The best I have had for that has been Dobermans. They don't allow dog visitors. lol I wish they had more hair.

My rotties liked to stay outside during the winter days--- pretty short coats on them, too. Being house dogs, they were in most nights, unless they want to go out. I have a large fenced front yard for the dogs to play. It is my understanding LGD dogs need access to a barn for shelter; only in the range situation are the dogs expected to sleep out under the stars.

I have heard of people using Rotts for guarding chickens. Zazouse on here has one, among his/her dozen livestock guard dogs. I had a Rott years ago. His hair was a whole lot thicker than my Doberman's.

Interesting that were you live people don't have as many dogs. Why do you think that is? Where I live most people have at least one dog and most more than one.

I'm going to have to have a red or blue heeler. I believe I may get one this spring. I wish I had that invisible fence installed on about 20 acres. I wish they would make it without the wire, with just some kind of transmitters or emitters (whatever you might call them) that you could install on a post around an area.

They make them without wire but not that large an area is covered...though you can buy several transmitters and place them so they overlap~pretty costly. I've seen folks use them with the wires atop their regular cattle fencing and you can buy spools of the insulated wires they use for it.

My dogs have been using the wireless system for over 10 yrs now and I love it! Freedom of movement over a large area while still being contained is so much better than a kennel, line, or keeping them in the house.

We don't have many dogs around these parts either...mostly if we see a stray it's been dumped off along the highway and is roaming on its own. About 2-3 times a year we'll see a stray dog come along but if they come back twice they will be seen no more...by anyone.

Speaking of dogs, I mentioned the other day that I have to contain my chickens because of the pittbulls down the road always getting out. Twice this week they have bit one neighbor and threatened his wife. Called the cops. Now they have to build a big fence to contain them. We'll see.

They bit a guy and the only punishment was a fence? Are folks stark raving mad?

If that fellow had bit the dog they would have him up on charges for cruelty to animals..... strange world in which we live now.

9_9 I love pitbulls but SOOO many people can't control them. My neighbor has a pitull/lab mix and he is a rescue... He acts super aggressive, barking and charging, until you actually stand up to him or take even one step towards him, or look at him angry.. Then he becomes meek and quiet and turns into the sweetest dog. He is always getting off their tie out and causing trouble! I have collected him from wandering my street so many times that he comes to me when I call him and follows my commands as well as his twat sorority girl owner. Eight or so times in the last year. Once he was chasing a kid down the street and the other time he was chasing after my sister and her 14 year old dog aggressive dog.

Not that I can say much better for the other dog owners in the area. There's an aierdale on the corner with a 4ft fence that he can peek his head over... His owners let him out into their tiny fenced in plot anytime he barks... And he barks at neighborhood dogs. So he goes out into this insecure fence whenever a dog walks by. And there's two golden retreivers who live behind my sister across the street that are always off leash and roaming the area and are very territorial. And around the bend there are 2-3 daschunds with an invisible fence that ends just about a foot shy of the sidewalk which they ignore to attack people walking up the sidewalk... And the fox terrier down the road from them with an invisible fence (well away from the sidewalk luckilly) that yaps and chases anyone that passes and, and, and....

And this is why I have a 6ft wooden privacy fence for my back yard.

Sounds like a nightmare neighborhood...I'd be tempted to have a 6 ft. board fence around the entire house...with soundproofing! How do you get any sleep at all?
