Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Yeah..he gets a little nervous if he's indoors too long...he wants to know what's going on out there. He's not a very restful, lazy dog like my other dogs were...he's bouncy, wiry and exuberant even as old as he is. But he's just the sweetest, most humble of dogs...even my ol' Ma likes him and she's not a dog person.

So..I retired Toby, who was too old to mate, and kept Fat Cochin...who turned out to not be fat, just fluffy with feathers. Having a younger rooster that would breed~and he is breeding~seemed to stimulate my pullets into laying and it also seemed to unite my flock. He's very much the gentleman, quiet and sweet...don't know how he will do out on free range but he seems to be learning fast and the hens really like him, so I'll keep him awhile.

Jake is super intelligent...scary how smart he is and very much a character. Never ending source of amusement, that dog.

Did you retire Toby the way I think? Again, sorry, missed a bunch. Kind of grew on Toby, but I understand the rhythms of life. If it is what I think, that boy had a rewarding and purposeful life.

As far as Jake, that is the kind of dog I want someday. I have 3 right now, while VERY smart, they are not smart in a way I like. They are DH's dogs, so I learn to deal with what I have and adapt to protect :)

Yes..that's it exactly..I like that expression, "rhythms of life". Toby's story was told and now a new one has begun. He was too old to breed and was getting greedy at the feeder, no longer letting his hens eat first, etc. It was time to go. Every time a really good story ends it's a little sad, but it's always exciting and a sense of discovery to start a new story. Except for that brief time at the bad place farm, Toby had a really wonderful life.

I'm not often intrigued by an animal...but this Fat Cochin caught my notice right away and I think he was supposed to come to me. I know that sounds funny but I've known a few animals that entered my life and I knew it was no accidental meeting...they were supposed to enter just there, at that moment, and were supposed to be mine.

I hope one day you get the dog for you in just that way...like he was supposed to belong to you only...there's nothing quite like having a dog that's responsive to your wants and is smart enough to even anticipate them. I've been blessed enough to have three such dogs, all different, but all incredibly the same in that kind of intelligence and sensitivity. It's like a gift from the Creator, especially for you.

You are what I consider a Good Shepherd.

When God grants it I will have the dog meant for me. He guided me to my current flock that I never dreamed of, but they are what I my family needed. He does work in mysterious ways.

Yes! That's the perfect way to get a dog! Each time a dog came to me, I was not looking for the dog...didn't even really want a dog at that time in life, but God knows best what we need and always provides it for us before we even know we need it. You know if God brings the animal, there's no uncertainty there....it was meant to be yours.

Thank you! I don't know when I've had a nicer compliment than that one!

Yay!!!   Mine had started laying on the coldest day too....wonder what's up with that?  That goes against everything they say about the cold being a factor in birds not laying well.

You are IN for it! :barnie   I hope Rodney's comb does alright in this new cold snap...you'll have to bring him in on the couch for popcorn and a movie until this is all over.

Not sure why they decided to lay in this cold weather but boy am I glad they did !

I slathered a good glorp of CO on his comb tonight and I'm hoping it will help against this biting cold ! If I bring Rod in for movie and popcorn then I better do it while the other half is away or else I'll be roosting next to Rod in the coop! :gig

Well, he is very handsome....could make your husband jealous! TW keeps suggesting that I bring these foo foo roosters indoors for movie and popcorn....she's a hoot! It will be interesting if the CO will protect him from further damage. Keep us posted!

That song has been totally ruined for me....  I am all for rescuing from bad situations but what is shown on TV is blatant commercialism.  I have to stop now Or I Will get on a soap box.  :/

Me too! Of course I don't like to see any animal mistreated but I think a lot of people have gone a little nuts, psshhht totally nuts! They cry and moan over every hairy creature out there yet they do what they do to human babies and the elderly and nobody is on tv shedding a tear over them. And to me, the word "rescue" has lost all meaning. When I think of "rescue" I think of somebody running into a burning building or something to rescue a person or even an animal. Now they have tagged the name "rescue" on every creature that goes through an animal shelter.

Bee, I bought season 4 of Duck Dynasty on dvd today. Now I have to decide which rooster to bring in to watch it with me. Do I make them take turns or just let them draw straws and one get to come in for a Duch Dynasty marathon...? But that's not really fair. I just don't know what to do! LOL
