Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

What a great day this is turning out to be. I found a grow out pen 3X12 totally inclosed with hardwire for $80. SIL Clint is going after it now. He talked to the fellow and talked him down from $125. The man built it 2 yrs ago with $200 for materials. My babies won't be here for 6 weeks so that will give me time to get a good coop built. Happy Happy!!

Congratulations Linda!!

Lisa :)

Good find Linda! :) Don't forget to sanitize it real good. I have read that ammonia will kill cocci and bleach won't. I'm not sure so I'd probably use both - both NOT together. LOL

Yeah, plan to do that. Not as great a bargain as was told. Not hardcloth just plastic webbing. But I have the welded fence to go over it already, so no big deal. Super happy about this. It makes it all the more real. KWIM?

Got a mondo egg today from one of the pullets....it's cool to get those but I hope she doesn't make a habit of it. FF is doing good in this cold weather and in my bedroom...not too active, just right. I miss the bottom bucket, though, as it seemed to always come out good with that system on the amount of water to feed, but with just the single bucket I seem to have a tougher time getting my mix just right any longer. It's good but not great.

When spring comes, back to the double bucket!

Wait until you get that first egg. You couldn't be any more proud if you layed it yourself! LOL

One of my leghorns layed a big double yolker the other day. Nice, but like you I hope she doesn't make a habit of it. My ff got messed up. It did smell good, like sweet apples. Now it smells a little barfish - YUCK!

Mine smells sweet....is that a bad thing? And you roll with MD 20/20 barf in your bedroom? That's dedicated....

Could mean that it's either very lightly fermented or that it's just wet feed. I have a lid snapped down on one side of the bucket and you really don't smell it at all until that lid is uncorked and the mash is stirred. My bedroom is one of the coldest rooms in the house so it's not cooking hard in there.
