Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Maybe even getting those trimmings and grinding them up fine and feeding it raw? Do you have a meat grinder? If not, can you afford some hamburger now and again? Or would just feeding suet cakes be sufficient, I wonder?
I was just thinking about suet cakes. I have like a 3 pound thing of lard back there that NEEDS to be used b 4 it goes rancid and I could put crushed corn and some BOSS and scratch in it I guess. No I don't have a grinder Bee. Hubby always wants to feed the dog my left over egg yellows and I tell him, noooo he's not laying eggs for you and doesn't NEED them. Give them to those poor chickens that are keeping you in EGGS! lol I'm not wild about the yellows but I do try and eat some since they ARE good for you.

When I got my Gnarly Bunch back from the bad farm I gave them some suet cakes to get some fat on them before winter...they loved them and it really seemed to round out their diet at the time because they were so anemic from the lice and such.

I just melted down some peanut butter suet cakes and added BOSS to them for chicken treats for a friend...poured them into big egg shaped molds that are normally used for making soaps or chocolate candy. Could be you could add some ground hamburger to yours, a dollop of peanut butter and some BOSS and see how it goes for them.

going to cut and paste this so I can try it. Sure wanting them to get some cover over their skin before the heat sets in. 2-3 of them were blistered today from the sun. :( A friend was here and he said to put some sunscreen on em. lol

Thank you again Bee. I don't hold these chickens or rooster or anything. Only time I even handle them is when I need to do something to them. I DID try and hold the BA's just to make them used to me because I was having fits with them but not even doing that now. The BA's will not even come through the door if I am near the door or hubby either. Messing with the roo REALLY FREAKS them out when I do the stick with him. They are really shy chickens and once I get me some more RIR hens going I am going to sell these boogers because I just move too fast for them and they STAY spooked by me. lol Oh you should hear them if one is in the nesting boxes when I go to check for eggs. oh my gosh. lol I'll have to video one soon.

Rosemarie, I am surprised...! You don't eat the yolks? You do know that the vitamins etc in the yolk are the same ones needed to help absorb the vitamins in the egg whites. Eating just the whites is like eating white, solid water. My sister eats pasturized liquid milk-carton egg whites and white bread with margarine on it for brekkers every day. No wonder she found out she had really bad protein deficiencies during her pregnancy! (She also thinks my eggs are creepy and super unsafe to eat.)

Another interesting fact is those vitamins in the whites are the ones that give a healthy phosphorus level to the egg shell for carnivores consumption. So when feeding to your dog as a major part of the diet it is best to feed the whole egg instead of just the shell.

Incredible how the world works like that, huh?

It is! I couldn't just eat the whites...I only tolerate them because they are attached to, and can be flavored with, the yellow!

Sometimes when I eat just one laid-that-day over easy egg, lightly salted and pepper on the whites, yolk cracked out over lightly buttered wheat toast (only real unsalted butter of course) I feel like I could eat nothing else for my whole life and just be happy forever! Pure perfect bliss. Nothing compares!

Hey Rose. Is your birds' feathering not any better? Mine seems quite a bit better. They still look a little rough but seem to be straightening up.

My birds don't like to be touched but the things are like puppies, can't hardly walk for them. I need to throw corn or something across the pen to get them out of the way. lol Some still won't move. They know the good stuff is in the bucket. lol

I agree completely :gig
Morning all,  just got off my state la thread and there is a newbie that has a new chick with a swollen hip or something.  So she's got it at work today and is laughing about taking a $5 chick to a $200 vet visit.   I didn't want to make a newbie feel bad but it just about killed me to not say "Are you crazy!"   And I may still do it.    :gig

Edited for content:  Ok I couldn't stand it.  So I told her to not waste her money on vet bills.  Always going to be accidents and she'll go broke at the Vets.   Survival of the fittest.  I may get some flak but who cares.  :lau
