Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Totally off the subject, but has anyone been growing mangel beets to feed in place of some grain.    I found a article that give some info on it.  See what you think.

I bought some last fall but didn't get them planted.  I might do a few now and some more in the early winter for my zone 8b

I've grown beet greens for the hens and they love them. As for beets mine will eat them after they are cooked. They freeze great and I gave to the hens thru our long winter

Gave the meaty chicks their first clump of sod with grass attached, to keep them occupied for a couple of days while I'm gone and to give them grit, while inoculating them to our soils. Next week they get turned out with the big flock at 2 wks...and maybe even sooner if they keep escaping the brooder.

@Bee... my CX that I was afraid I was going to have to cull is doing fine now. His legs seem a little stiff but he is up and going like nothings wrong. I'm sure glad I didn't chop his head off! LOL

Yes! I'm wondering if he had a vitamin deficiency that the FF is slowly correcting. Let's hope it maintains stability when he puts on weight.

I go tomorrow to pick up the gamebird starter that I ordered for my chicks, and will start fermenting it for the chicks that are due to hatch next weekend. This will be the first chicks that I have started on FF from the beginning....and they are my meat birds. I am looking forward to see how they grow with it! I am even considering fermenting my pigs feed.....I pick it up tomorrow as well.

Bee, did I tell you that my capon weighs 10 1/2 pounds now? He is on the menu for Easter!

You will just have to let us know how he tastes as opposed to a regular rooster of that age....my brother is really exploring this method for his "dream" farm that he will never have and I promised him I'd find out from one of you folks if there is discernible flavor differences.

He is 10 months old and acts like a girl. He goes and lays down with the hens to keep them company while they lay their eggs...funniest thing I've ever seen!
