Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I promise this is the last one. You know I love old books. Here's one that is delightful. Called Poultry Secrets. by Michael Boyer 1909. It has a lot of tips from back in the day. A lot is well known now and implemented like sprouting oats, etc. It's only 50 pages but has tons of tips on how to tell the best layer, incubation tips. I thought of you Bee when I read that chapter. A short enough read that I engulfed it in one sitting.

Did it have anything in there similar to what I do with chickens?

No but it talked about setting up the broody house with mounds of dirt and then hay for them to lay. The also talked about incubation It's only 50 pages so skim to that part if you want. I love google/books

.SIL Clint went to Home Depot for me to get my new AC for the Storehouse. For the next batch it will be too hot without it. Now all I need to do is predator proof my dog kennel coop and babies are going outside. Yea!!

Yes!  I'm wondering if he had a vitamin deficiency that the FF is slowly correcting.  Let's hope it maintains stability when he puts on weight.

Highly possible. He had something seriously wrong, couldn't get around without flapping his wings where ever he went then falling over when he got there. Now it is hard to pick him out of the crowd. I hope his legs hold out when he puts the weight on.

I go tomorrow to pick up the gamebird starter that I ordered for my chicks, and will start fermenting it for the chicks that are due to hatch next weekend.  This will be the first chicks that I have started on FF from the beginning....and they are my meat birds.  I am looking forward to see how they grow with it!  I am even considering fermenting my pigs feed.....I pick it up tomorrow as well.

I got my CX a bag of 20% gamebird feed Tuesday. I don't know what all they put in this stuff but it smells good and smells even better after it's fermented. The only thing I don't like about it is it is ground so fine - like corn meal. But they eat it fine, like everything else. lol

The guy that owns my feed mill may be making somebody else some 28% gamebird feed. I'm thinking buy that for $16 or so then cut it way back with cheaper grains for my layers and CX.

TW, this gamebird starter is 28% protein. It also contains a botanical supplement that promotes gut health and digestion, immune system support....just really good stuff. One bag will do me the whole hatching season because I just use it for 2-3 weeks with my babies. I haven't fermented it before, though. I remember opening a bag last year and thinking that I got a little whiff of licorice....and thought I was nuts! Then I read about the APEX.....the first ingredient in it is star anise extract! So it WAS licorice I smelled. That doesn't mean I'm not nuts, but at least my nose was spot on...LOL. My regular starter/grower has it too, so they never get antibiotics.

Do you feed the full 28% or do you cut it with lower protein grains? This does smell really good too.
