Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Thanks
I will finish reading but I guess

I will not be changing to a higher protein feed.

I don't know how much of this you can apply to chickens, I didn't read, or inspect, it all, but it's the closest I could find about your question.

That link has a very nice explanation of what happens with the whole "satisfying hunger" thing...they don't eat as much when high protein, but they are actually not filling their calorie requirement, leading them to eventually be HUNGRIER. I clipped this portion....they did do an experiment with chickens ;)
chickens and rats act like protein dominates appetite control:

A shortage of protein makes them hungry, and it takes a lot of carbohydrate to satisfy that hunger. So they eat a calorie excess.

"An excess of protein satisfies their hunger and causes them to quit eating while they are still in calorie deficit."

Good point, the Atkins diet...many people lose a ton of weight, only to resort to cravings from lack of carbs and loss of vital nutrients...

I say, feeding meat birds, pile on protein...they aren't going to live long enough for the health problems to crop up..sad but true.. For longevity, I believe a balanced ration is better in the long term...just my opinion :)

Trouble is, protein satisfies them falsely, so if you're raising meat birds, which is the theme of this thread, you will lose meat from them UNDER-eating. We need to listen to the horses mouth and not the other end.

Ha yes!! :D I keep forgetting this IS a MEAT BIRD thread lol... But so are you actually starving them when they think they're full?

According to that site. I think the FF would be best left unaltered, don't you? If they can't free range and get what THEY know is good for them, then the carbs have to be addressed. Right?

Oh absolutely! See, I've been following along trying to decide if I even WANT to do meat birds again next spring... I KNOW breed can make a difference, but when I have free range offered and they refused to even leave the run, I had no choice but to supplement... I had to go get pellets that I don't normally use, cost out of my pocket for things I already HAVE, put in pellet form because they were too busy eating to go...eat! It was sad...but they are delicious ;)

I think of it like this...
Plant=animal
Nitrogen=protein
Ie, if I feed my strawberries nothing but nitrogen they'll be big and green and beautiful sure...but NO berries and poor disease resistance... But I'm not growing berries here, these are chickens to eat, so they need to be at weight within 10 weeks or the cost to me isn't worth it....

BTW, I didn't have to supplement FF except for the alfalfa pellets...I agree they sat by that feeder and stuffed face until I pulled the pan away every evening. But they made weight and saved me buying Purdue broilers ha-ha ;)

Carbs have to be addressed when they're not foraging. Definity...everything g does ;)
