Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Just take a ruler and measure them across(diameter) and measure how high they sit in the pan/plate.  Should give you a good idea of the difference in size, even if it's in millimeters.  Crack one of your eggs now and put it in a bowl in the fridge(it won't rot in 2 wks time....the eggs in the store are much, much older than that).  Should still show a good visual two weeks later of the difference of one of your previous eggs compared to your present eggs.

Take a picture of it too.  Two days sitting in the fridge, I imagine the yolks would fall at least a little bit.
why not just select an average-looking egg now, seal it whole in a baggie to prevent evaporation, store it three weeks and crack it with a "hen warm" egg on the same day?

Sounds like a better plan, W! I like better plans. If I hadn't been buzzing on some cold tablets I might have come up with a better plan myself, so am so glad someone out there has their head in working gear.

very good ideas, I will use tomorrows eggs since i am waiting for my acv to arrive. Can't wait!!!

Here is my setup:

I've come away from using the collanders on the right just this week. I purchased "medium stackable totes" from WallyMart on the left. It literally has cut time from 45 minutes to 15 minutes. For small batches the collanders work great but on a bigger scale I love the totes

.

I drilled multiple holes in the bottom of the tote only where the holes will sit inside the other tote when stacked. Same thing with the sides. You will see only on the two sides that sit directly above the bottom tote have holes.

Here is a closer shot of the stacked totes and you can see it draining into the bottom tote. When I get up in the morning I'll run downstairs pull out the top tote, stack and go about my morning business.

This is what it looks like after draining for an hour. There is some liquid on the right and left side where there are no holes drilled but its very minimal and not a big deal at all.

This is what it looks like after I've added the new feed and set inside to do its thing. I'll then cover this with cheese cloth which I failed to take a picture of. I put elastic on the cheese cloth so it fits like a shower cap. These totes didn't come with a lid which would have been nice but with the ease and time of this system it was an ok trade.

Really like your idea too! about how much feed does this hold? I am still flipping back thru the thread, i jotted down things i wanted to revisit.

WOW! I can't say THANK YOU enough! I have 2 of these, one just became chicken use only! I am having a lot of trouble stirring, I am no wimp, but am only 5 ft tall and about maybe 100lbs. I am a southpaw and my left shoulder has had several surgeries. (Tumors, long story) I have 49 birds. Geese, ducks, guinea and chickens... (23 meaties, 5 layers and my adorable RLW roo) and they are all starting on FF. 2 Pigs also, but the alpaca i am hesitant to do it...They eat mostly grass hay and a cup of all stock daily for both. This will sure save my poor arm its already pretty sore from moving the feed buckets.
hey if you do start feeding it to your alpaca (or anyone else out there does) please let us know! Mine eat grass, get some hay and some alpaca pellets - I would love to know if FF is OK for them....

I certainly will! I like the idea of what benefits they would gain from it...will be looking into doing it for them, as well as goats and cows.

I'd like to know this as well :)

And I can ferment with pellets right?

Just got turkey finisher pellets, as regular grower was far to low in protein for a mixed flock that does include turkeys as well.

The regular grower (only 1 choice) was 15% protein. Starter was 17% (as was layer) and the turkey finisher is 24%. That high of a % is okay this time of year, no?
