Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I've read the thread, but I'm still unclear about something. Wayyyy back I read a post that said you couldn't do the FF inside the house because it let off some sort of gas that would kill you. Did I misunderstand or misread that? I'd like to bring my bucket inside the house because it isn't hot enough outside anymore to ferment. But I certainly don't want to kill or injure my family. Is it okay to ferment in my kitchen? Can I just bring my double bucket inside and find a place for it? Do I keep it uncovered inside or cover it?
Presently I have the setup like Bee outside in double buckets. But nothing is fermenting with the 45F nighttime temps and 53F daytime temps.

I cover mine with a heavy towel.

I don't know who posted that, but it's simply not true. Fermenting large amounts of grain or sileage in a silo can emit some dangerous levels of gases but a single bucket of grain isn't quite the same as tons of grain in an enclosed space. People have been fermenting foods indoors, even grains, since time began.

x2 - I use my son's bedroom (he's off at college) for fermenting and growing meal worms, and when I open the door I am generally greeted by a mild pleasant smell of healthy fermentation.

Just wait With each year you find strength you didn't know you had, will you only dreamed of, and new ambition you must see through. You go to bed just wiped out, and by some miracle, morning brings the renewal you need (often with the help of some ibuprofen) to start again! One nice thing about aging is the appreciation you gain for things once minor, small increments of accomplishment, and kindnesses repeated day after day you never noticed before.

Forgot about those yep every day like clock work. Wife sets them aleve (anyway that's what she says they are) beside my coffee I never see the bottle. She sez she likes them little blue pills um I mean oh never mind.

Found it, page 28 post 276 and a few posts later I see that Bee responded with a similar comment about it not being a silo. Thanks again!

Just make sure if it looses that sour smell you give it a little kick start of ACV. I don't mean when it gets a bad smell but when it has almost no smell at all. I have noticed a pattern on this thread that just before someone says it started to smell bad they had said it did not have the sour smell any more.
Anyone else notice that?

I am starting my FF tomorrow but, was lookin at the protein levels and noticed my feed label says "Do not provide additional grain." Is this only cause the feed manufacturer wants me to use as much there feed as possible? Also for now am just using crumbles with ACV. It's 17% protein Next week I plan on adding more grains. Is it to much protein if I add Flaxseed and barley to this mix, with Boss tossed to them for a treat from time to time.

It's really not necessary to supplement a 17% protein ration. Upping the proteins to that degree can cause problems down the road if you are not careful.

Why does everyone use DE?
I never suggest it to anyone. It's such a waste of money IMO. Costs $10 for a freezer bag full.
I'll stick to wood ash.

$17.50 here. I use it wastingly in the wood shavings on the coop floor, dust my dogs feed it to the cats for worms. It does work and the proof is here. I hate cats wife loves them have a lot to many to take to vet or even catch. Scrawny scraggly poop dripping out just plain gross. Fed them DE twice what I thought was good for them. Couple months later they start gaining weight poop slows down. I cut the DE to less than half what we were giving a day to every other day. At about 6 months we had Strong beautiful healthy cats. That was about 2 years ago and now the cats are still beautiful. I still hate them though. They are easier to look at though Yes it is the white flour food grade Perma Guard.
I ain't recommending though just saying what happened and how cheap it is.
