Ferrets are illegal in Cali, yet I see people with them?

the problem is the us is full of invasive species that started out as pets. Entire ecosystems are being destroyed.

Well then I guess in their wisdom the government should have banned cats altogether long, long ago. Cats are very capable of living feral in many climates, they kill untold numbers of native birds and many are not spayed/neutered therefore our current population explosion. Seems like that is a much bigger problem then domestic ferrets which are usually altered, are not able to survive well outside and are highly suseptible to predators themselves.

Sorry, this is not true. it is also illegal to OWN in CA. If someone complains to fish and game that you own a ferret, they can come to your house and take it. They usually give you 24-48 hours to call a rescue and rehome it out of state.

There is much evidence to support the above post. Ferrets are obligate carnivores, 100% domesticated, and cannot live on their own much past a week or two at the most.

We bought our little girl in Vegas, smuggled her in to CA, and then out again a few years later when we moved to WA state. I would NEVER have risked taking her to a pet store there!! We used to tell visitors to the house that she was a "stretch rat"

Oh, by the way, if anyone would like to help there's a thread in the emergencies section, about an abcess. I'm really worried about her and the abcess... First there was a small one, I lightly squeezed it and it popped, about a week later there's this larger lump on her head and something round on the inside. I tried to feel around but she was making noise, so I assume that it's more painful now.

Ferrets were illegal in CA because of it being a large egg production state and ferrets would eat the chickens feet and legs in the cages..The restrictions were eased a few years back...PS don't rag on CA, we native Californians are not the liberal nut jobs.

I apologize. I had always been lead to believe the opposite. Even when I owned two of em.

I used to think so, but I'm beginning to believe Wa has you beat! Could just be here in Olympia- feels a lot like Berkeley.

It IS funny, but you have no idea how serious I am. People in San Francisco have banded together to ban circumcisions, because it is cruel.

From what I remember about using ferrets for hunting, they don't actually kill the prey, but just chase them out of burrows. If the ferrets killed the prey underground, they would eat it underground, and the hunter would be left without his prize. When using ferrets to hunt rabbits, the people would locate all the entrances/exits for the warren and cover them with nets, then set a ferret loose into the burrow network. The ferret would chase the rabbit, which would then flee out one of the holes, then get trapped in the net and get clubbed. For hunting in this style, ferrets were selected for chasing, not killing, and even these hunting lines probably wouldn't survive if they were turned loose. The ones brought to New Zealand to control pests were interbred with wild polecats, the ancestors of the domestic ferret, in order to increase their prey drive enough to survive on their own.
