Ferrets are illegal in Cali, yet I see people with them?

As an ex animal control worker from california....yes, they are illegal to own. If caught, they are immediately removed. We used to give people some time to find an out of state home for them......and if found, we had a transport person who was licensed to do so that we would refer them to. Ferret stayed in our custody until all was arranged.

If owner could not find out of state home or did not bother trying, they were required to relinquish the pet and we would send to a ferret rescue out of state. A few people tried to fight it but 100% lost. Illegal is illegal. Whether we agreed with it or not is another thing.

And beware of flaunting it. I remember a ferret we ended up with because someone was carrying it around a pet event and we were there. No choice, we had to take it.

Work to get the law changed, don't just break it. Or do break it, but be prepared to lose in a worst case scenario.
