Question. How long after Coturnix have mated the female will lay fertile eggs?
I am keeping them separate as otherwise the males are extremely aggressive and leave the females without feathers. I have heard for chicken the female could lay fertile eggs up to 20 days after mating.
Does anybody know about Japanese Quail?

As a general rule, the hen can retain viable sperm for 14 days, could be a little longer though if the conditions are right.
I usually wait a week after I witness them breeding before I collect any for hatching.
Hens can reject the sperm, too! So a single mating isn't a for sure thing that the eggs will be fertile.

If you wait for a week and then start collecting eggs, you would be collecting for 7 days only, is that correct? At what T do you store the collected eggs?
