I have a Blue Asian Male And Female. (shes a wonderful layer) I currently have them separated. She is starting to lay regular single yolk eggs (been laying for 3 months)so i was gonna put the two together so's to have incubator eggs for my sister. My question is . . ..DRUM ROLL>.......How long do they need to be "together" before i know the eggs are fertile and how do i store them till they go into the incubator? I am in V.a so its not cold at night (55+)and the days are in the 80s . Can i leave them on the counter or do they need more attention ? My sister blessed me with 3 bantams that i have grown to love .She loves egg producers and i have a wonderful parent stock . I just have no clue what to do or when HELP!!

Hi there,

I believe two weeks is probably about right before you can expect fertile eggs. If you break an egg after that time, you should be able to see a lighter coloured round speck on the yolk (utube this and you will see what i mean). Once you see this on the yolks, then your roo is doing his thing.

From what i have read, max 10 days before incubating (this is what i do), but i know that people have had success with older eggs. In terms of keeping them before incubating, put them in a egg box, pointed end down. Tilt the egg box twice a day (put one end of the egg box on something to keep it at an angle, then turn the egg box the other way around so the opposite end is raised). Keep the eggs indoors, but maybe not in the kitchen as the temperatures can fluctuate when you cook - i keep mine in the larder / pantry.

Hope this helps and good luck!

For optimal development, store the eggs for only 7 to 10 days maximum. They should be stored at a temperature of 55 to 70 degrees F. If they are stored at higher temperatures than that (especially 80 degrees +), they can start developing at a less-than-normal rate, which can lead to developmental problems in the embryos. The humidity during storage should be relatively high . . . I think in the range of 45 to 55% relative humidity. A cool basement is often used as an ideal storage location.

well, told a fib. She laid a huge egg today and darn thing had 3 yolks. i used it in a cake and had it in the mix before i realized that i didn't even take a picture! usually when i see them on this sight that big there is an egg in an egg but not 3 yolks . . .considering this goof egg i think i am gonna give her some more time.
