Mine have shelter, but not coops. They go to the shelter at night time, but no matter how cold it is outside, they are out running around. Then again, I have always said I have Stepford chickens.

I have trained my chickens to return to thier shelter at night for safety. Should a chicken believe that it knows better than me and roosts in a tree, I retrieve it by flashlight glare if need be and keep them shut in to the big pen to remind them where they live.
