Fight or flight - A roleplay

Aveline sat outside of the meden, feet swinging freely from the porch that overlooked the wood.

Rather nonchalantly, Caelius walked over and plopped himself directly in front of Phoenix and proceeded to stare at her.

Plodding carefully through the dense vegetation, a harpy trekked through the forest. She was sent to find others of her kind, but with a catch - she could not use her wings. She could hardly see over some of the foliage to navigate her way. Determination kept her going thus far, but her feet ached now and she was cold in this foreign climate. The young woman stopped in her tracks and breathed a sigh, shivering and clutching herself in her own arms. She looked up, peering through the overhanging boughs. The glimpses of the mountains through the branches were but a spark of hope. Should she stop now when she was so close to her destination? Of course not, she thought; she couldn't waste another minute. They were depending on her.

Her mind was quickly changed when she took a wrong step and tripped over a raised tree root, tumbling nearly head-first into several boulders. She caught herself with her hands and managed to save her face from colliding with the rock, but her knee struck the stone and there was a sharp crack. She winced and bit into her lip, choking back a shriek in pain. She had no choice now; she had to stop.

She flapped her wings to lift herself back to her feet and she slowly lifted up into an Oak tree, were she climbed into a large, forked branch that she could sit on and rest her leg. She reclined and tried to relax her tension, wearily closing her eyes and attempting to sleep.

She awoke to find that her entire leg had cramped and stiffened from being raised on a branch for so long, and she winced as she lifted it off with her hands. She grabbed onto a higher branch and began to swing back and forth to gain inertia, before finally jumping off and flapping her wings. She soared up and above the forest, smiling slightly when she saw how much nearer the mountains were now. She angled her wings up to catch the draft, which helped her slowly ascend upward. When her toes nearly skimmed the surface of the highest conifer tree on the mountain, she reached her hands down to grasp it. She carefully climbed down from the tree and swung off from the lowest branch, landing on her good foot. She began to hobble across the cold, rocky mountaintop in search of the other harpies, holding a wing over her head to sheild her face from the harsh afternoon sunlight.

Phoenix paused her preening and looked at Caelius, her tail twitching awkwardly "Umm, hello?"

"Hello" He replied smoothly, shifting his legs until he was sitting in an odd cross legged position, both palms resting either of his knees.

"What do you want?" She asked sharply, her voice edged with annoyance.

"Nothing, why? You have a problem? Do you find my presence offensive in some way?" He asked, raising his eyebrows slightly.

Britannia perched herself up onto a branch beside Ciara, preening the young girl's glossy pale-yellow feathers.

He pursed his lips, " Interesting... Interesting." He mumbled, looking back up at her, " Hard of hearing? I said nothing and I lack a good reason to lie. At least as far as you know, seeing as you can't read minds. Although, that would be quite interesting, what am I thinking?"

"Go annoy someone else!" She snapped, her eyes flashing angrily as she stalked to the end of the branch and launched herself into the air. The tips of her reddish orange feathers brushed his face as she caught a warm updraft and lifted into the sky.
