The best thing for the cockerel is for him to be out with the pullets. As Shad mentioned, it will be rough for a while but ultimately that is most definitely what is best for HIM.

Put him in with the hens is the short answer. Yup, it will be rough for a while. They will probably make his life a misery until he matures. In a coop and run on his own he isn't going to learn what he needs to if he is to free range with the others.

I do appreciate your problem.
The thing is if you keep letting him in the house and feeding him and giving him cuddles you will become his family. One of the first things a maturing cockerel here tries out is mating with his mum; that will be you under the current circumstances. Then he's going to want to be the boss and that's when an awful lot of people end up on this forum writing posts complaining that the rooster has suddenly become aggressive. On investigation many of these aren't roosters, they're still cockerels. After these cockerels grow up, my suspicion is they would probably turn out fine; about 12 months to 14 months old they seem to finally get a proper grip on their behavior.

You could confine him to a separate coop and run but later if you release him with the hens I think you will have worse problems.
